Glastonbury Abbey - The Entrance

This is the Magdalene Street entrance to the abbey in 1960

The approach through the small archway to the left in the first image leads on to an ancient gateway ....
... built in 1512, and leading to .... ... ancient almshouses (but no well) which were still there in 1960. Later they were demolished as part of "improvements." St. Patrick's Chapel is behind the well, and part of the tower of the church of St. John the Baptist in the High Street can be seen. Some ancient almshouses remain near the Magdalene chapel opposite the abbey grounds The Gate in 1981. The Gate in 1995. The Legends - requires CABLE or BROADBAND connection Return to Glastonbury Index
