In 6 patients, the immediate effects of methods "phoenix spreading the wings" with gold needle, silver needle and stainless steel needle on skin temperature were observed before and after needling.

Experiments were performed for 52 times on 6 patients (Yin-deficiency with fever, diabetes, thyroidism). Among 52 times, there were 48 times with a drop of the skin temperature (average 0.79°c), 4 times without change of skin temperature, or with a rise of temperature.

The effects of different needles were as follows: The skin temperature dropped with an average of 0.64°c(P<0.001) after needling by stainless steel needle, while the silver needle with an average of 1,11°c (P<0.001), the gold needle with an average of 1.17°e(P< 0.01). The difference between the skin temperatures of needling and unneedling was very significant. When the skin temperature felled, the patients had a feeling of cold.

Case report

Case 1. A male patient with diabetes, aged 50 years, was acupunctured at points Sanyinjiao, Quchi, Zusanli by the method stated above. The skin temperature was dropped by 0.5-1.3°c, blood glucose decreased from 263mg per cent to 150mg per cent, finger rheogrophy dicratic wave was improved, the amplitude decreased 0.02 ohm, the in-flow time shortened 0.02 sec-, in-flow index decreased 2per cent, the blood pressure rose, cold sensation was described by patient.

Case 2. A male patient with thyroidism, aged 42 years, was acupunctured at points Chize, Neiguan, the skin temperature was dropped by 1-1,4°c, the in-flow index of lung rheography was decreased by 3 per cent, while its amplitude was decreased by 0.11 ohm, the in-flow index of finger rheography was decreased by 1 per cent, its amplitude decreased from 0.02 ohm to 0.13 ohm, before acupuncture BMR4-48 percents, after acupuncture +43 percent.
