LASER USED IN PEDIATRIC ACUPUNCTURE

Ren Shouzhong

(Department of Acupuncture, Beijing Children's Hospital, BeiJing)

Since April 1979, He-Ne laser has been used in the department of acupuncture of our hospital. A number of pediatric diseases have been treated by this method, namely, enuresis, frequent micturition, infantile diarrhea, facial paralysis, sprain, etc. The total of 121 cases were treated. Of these, 84 cases were cured, 24 cases markedly improved, 12 cases-showed improvement and 1 case ineffective.

GZ-2 He-Ne laser was used to radiate the acupoints, 3-5 minutes for each acupoint. Wave length was 6528 A, output power, 3.0-5.5 mW, once a day, 3-12 times as course.

The acupoints were chosen according to the theories of traditional Chinese medicine, such as the theory of viscera and the theory of meridians and collaterals. For example, as the causative factor of nocturnal enuresis was deficiency of qi in the kidney and debility of the urinary bladder in controlling urination, so the method of treatment was to replenish the qi of the kidney to strengthen the ability of the urinary bladder in controlling urination. Zhongji, the Front-Mu point of the urinary bladder, Guanyuan, the crossing point of the Three Yin Meridians of Foot and Renmai; Qihai which might strengthen the original qi; Sanyinjiao, the meeting point of the Three Yin Meridians of Foot and Baihui which might invigorate vital function were usually chosen in the treatment of enuresis.
