Acute lumbar sprain is one of the common diseases in clinic. We have obtained certain satisfactory result from treatment of 343 cases of acute lumbar sprain in combination of acupuncture and manual skill. The method introduced is as follows:

Clinical examination and method of treatment: ask the patient to prostrate on a hard board bed, with his hands above the head. The doctor pushes and presses one by one from the first interspinal place of lumbar vertebra to the fifth sacral vertebra with the right thumb and forefinger. If tenderness is found in some interspinal place of lumber vetebra, it is very place where being traumatized. If the point of tenderness is not found in the two places, the doctor should check whether there is tenderness on the psoas. If the point is found in some interspinal place of lumbar vertebra or of sacral vertebra, the doctor should put his palm of the right hand on the point of tenderness with the left hand on the right, and press slightly. He should press quickly with strength for one or three times at the moment when the patient has taken expiration. After pressing apply acupuncture at Weizhong and Huatuo Spine points, reducing method should be used without retaining the needle.

If there is sprain on psoas, it also may be treated only by acupuncture. The points are Weizhong, Shenshu, Zhishi and Yaoyan. When acupuncture is applied at Weizhong, the needling sensation may reach to the painful place and to the roots of the feet or toes, which would give a good result at once.

Manipulations: Use reducing method at Weizhong, and mild reinforcing and reducing methods at the rest points.

Times and result of treatment: There were 170 cases being completely cured after one treatment, 91 cases after two treatments, 63 cases after three treatments, 10 cases after four treatments, 7 cases after five treatments and 2 cases after seven treatments. The curative rate of treatment is 100 per cent.

Typical case: Shuai was a 52 year old man. He worked with the lumbar bowing so hard that the lumbar was sprained. He could not prostrate and turn himself, and had difficulty in moving. There was unbearable pain during his movement. It was not better when he was treated in some hospital for half a month. Examination: After helping the patient to prostrate on a hard board bed, the doctor found significant tenderness while pushing and pressing to the interspinal place between the fifth lumbar vertebra and the first sacral vertebral. Treatment: The doctor pressed the point of tenderness quickly with strength for three times one after another, and then applied acupuncture at Weizhong and Huatuo Spine Points. After acupuncture the patient could immediately get up and take a walk by him self. He was quite well after treatment for two times.
