ISLAND AND BEACHES

MABUL ISLAND
Mabul Island is reputed to be one of the best places for
underwater macro-photography in the world. Located in the clear waters of the
Celebes Sea off the mainland of Sabah, it is surrounded by gentle sloping reefs
two to 40m deep.
Diving is the main activity on this island, and it can be
done all year round. Marine life that can be seen here include sea horses,
exotic starfish, fire gobies, crocodile fish, pipefish and snake eels. There
are over eight popular dive spots, each with its own speciality.
Three resorts cater to scuba divers – two are on the island
itself while one is on a converted oil rig platform about 500m offshore. All of
the resorts provide day trips for their guests to the nearby Sipadan and
Kapalai Islands.

PERHENTIAN ISLAND
Pulau Perhentian, meaning 'stopover island', is not to be
missed. Situated 21km off the coast of Terengganu, it consists of the islands
of Pulau Perhentian Besar and Pulau Perhentian Kecil. Covered by unspoilt
jungle, windswept palms, powdery white beaches and surrounded by sapphire blue
waters, Pulau Perhentian is a sanctuary for fishermen, migratory birds and of
course, discerning holiday- makers.
Located just off the edge of the Pulau Redang Marine Park,
Perhentian's coral-fringed waters have excellent underwater seascapes for
snorkelling and scuba diving.

SIPADAN ISLAND
The late Jacques Cousteau, a world-renowned oceanographer,
once described Sipadan Island as an untouched piece of art while divers around
the world have voted it as one of the top five dive sites in the world.
Rising 700m from the sea floor and at only 12ha., Malaysia's
sole oceanic island is very small in size. A 25-minute walk is all that is
needed to circle the island on foot, but the huge amount of diverse marine life
it attracts from the blackness of the open sea is simply mindblowing.
Surrounded by crystal clear waters, this crown jewel is a treasure trove of
some of the most amazing species out there.

NATURE AND ADVENTURE

GUNUNG MULU NATIONAL PARK
Mulu Caves National Park is home to one of the longest
networks of caves in the world. Here lies the worlds largest underground
chamber, the Sarawak Chamber, capable of accommodating forty Boeing 747
airplanes.
In Mulu, you will also find one of the worlds biggest cave
passage, Deer Cave, which can fit five cathedrals the size of Saint Pauls in
London. Another key attraction is Clear Water Cave, the longest cave in
Southeast Asia. The massive caves here are home to millions of bats and cave
swiftlets that swarm out into the jungle in great clouds every evening at dusk!
The outdoorsy type will be pleasantly surprised by some of
the best examples of tropical limestone weathering in the world, including
enormous razor-sharp pinnacles, deep-cut canyons, appropriately named The
Pinnacles. There are tough but rewarding multi-day hikes available from the
resort. A guide and porter are recommended.

KUALA GANDAH (ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE SANCTUARY )
This truly unique Elephant Orphanage of Kuala Gandah in
Pahang will give you a very rare opportunity to learn about these displaced
gentle giants.
Get the chance to ride them through the jungle, with the
help of an elephant guide, or mahout.
For the brave and adventurous, there are opportunities to
take the elephants down to the river and help give them a bath! There really is
no better opportunity than this to get in touch with these grey giants.
It is estimated that there are only 1,200 wild Asian
Elephants, also known as Elephus Maximus, left in Malaysia and this is the only
conservation centre set up to relocate these displaced pachyderms.
The elephants here have been rescued from all over Peninsula
Malaysia, providing them a safe sanctuary in the wild.

TAMAN NEGARA
Taman Negara (National Park) is the first and the oldest
official Protected Area in the country, originally named King George V National
Park. Declared in 1938 by the Sultans of Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu
(during King George's Silver Jubilee), it was gazetted to preserve the land's
indigenous nature in perpetuity. The park was renamed Taman Negara after the
nation gained independence in 1957.
The most popular activities at Taman Negara are river
cruises and jungle trekking. The canopy walk is also a must-see, offering a
fantastic close up view of activity in the rainforest canopy. Observation hides
are another great way to observe wildlife. Simple huts built high above the
ground allow guests to stay overnight to catch opportunities to observe animals
in their natural habitat. Cave exploration is also available, either by boat or
by foot.
Taman Negara is actually one of the oldest rainforests in
the world, estimated at 130 million years old. The abundance and diversity of
nature here is phenomenal, making it one of the world's most complex and rich
ecosystems.
