This song was infamously cut short on this album, butchering one of the finest gems of Judas Priest's initial era. Though the songs origin is 1971, the performances over 1971-1974 saw it balloon into a 10-20 minute plus epic gig closer. Not only does this reveal the evolution of the band but was the most popular song the band had throughout the duration of Atkins' time. It was the decision to cut this track down that truly sunk the Rocka Rolla record. While the other tracks that originally were going to be included on Rocka Rolla, like "Tyrant", "Genocide", "The Ripper" & "Victim Of Changes" all found their way onto the next album, the band's recording of this song with Rob; as well as a live bootleg from 1971 with performances of early Priest tracks like "Voodoo Rag", "Holy Is the Man", "Joey", "Mind Conception", "Whiskey Woman", "Demon Deceiver" - which was an early version of Dreamer from the Sad Wings Of Destiny album - and the full 14 minute version of this song, was lost by Gull Records. Since Gull has been spared obscurity by repeatedly milking Rocka Rolla & Sad Wings for over four decades, I am quite certain they regret losing these precious recordings as well. Al Atkins would later record a semi-full version of the track 25 years later - in 1998 - on his album Victim Of Changes. I would highly recommend this performance. |
Here are the '71 lyrics penned by Al Atkins that should have been on the original album.
