Food We were warned before going to Cayo Coco- you go for the beaches not the food. Well we were more impressed with the food than the beach. (Of course the beaches of Punta Cana have spoiled us). Our first night at the buffet they had a carving station with turkey, chicken, pork, and beef as well as a grill with jumbo shrimp and fish as well as a selection of salad items, including one of my favorites, sliced beets. They even had a good selection of cheeses and canopes on a regular basis. Although the carving station was not as plentiful every night, Jumbo Shrimp and grilled fish were. Breakfast and lunch at the buffet also were very good with a good selection at both.
Yarey Grill- a nice touch here that we havent had in the DR was a la carte service for lunch at the pool restaurant, Yarey. We ate here several days and it was very good, with service being quite fast. Burgers here were better than the DR and well done all the way through a big plus for me! They also had a good salad bar section here. There was even live music for lunchtime and full bar service.
A la Cartes There are 3 a la Carte restaurants, Italian La Fontanella, Cuban and Seafood- El Dorado. A nice feature at all the a la Cartes is that you are served 3 or 4 courses with no buffet style salad or desert bars.
The Italian was nice but was our least favorite since most of what was on the menu here you could get just as good at the buffet. The service however is what makes the Italian worth trying. The waitress did not rush us and even asked if wed like to set and relax before ordering desert.
The Cuban was located at Yarey and both the food and service here were good, although I doubt this is real Cuban food. This might be the place to mention that we had read so much about the bland food in Cuba but we did not find this to be the case at this resort! Portions here were just the right size for each course.
The Seafood Restaurant was our favorite, in fact one of favorites of all the resorts we have stayed at. We ate there mid week and were very impressed with the locale (open air overlooking the lagoon with a cool breeze), table settings, service and food at this restaurant, so we went back again for our last dinner. Service here was great as well and you were treated to a nice relaxing evening out. We had the same waitress the second night and when we mentioned we were leaving that night she even asked what time to make sure we would be served in time to make our bus!
Staff I would be very remiss if I did not give credit for a great vacation to the staff at this resort. They really are what make this place great! Everyone greeted us with a Hola as we walked by, even the groundkeepers. Language also was not a problem here. The servers shifted back and forth from English, to French, to Spanish with ease! Some of them had very good English. We never had to repeat ourselves to be understood. The staff would also take the time to talk to you and find out how you are enjoying your stay. They really seemed to want to make sure you had a great vacation. A couple of standouts for us were Yoel at the Piano Bar and Liber at the Dorado Bar. They both were very good at what they did and very good with their customers.
For us the Piano Bar was the place to be in the evenings the atmosphere there was very relaxing and friendly. They even had a pianist and vocalists 3 nights as well as a choir another night. It was like your local corner pub where every one knows your name, especially once you got to know Yoel and he got to know you.  Hed see your glass getting empty and hed be right there to see if you wanted another. He would even recommend drinks you might like.
The Placita Bar and Courtyard area, situated right next to the buffet was also another nice place to hang out. It too was very popular in the evenings. I loved going up for a morning coffee and sitting out taking in the quiet peaceful surroundings. We also would go back for after breakfast coffee, since the coffee in the buffet was not the greatest. Sometimes as well, wed hang out there for a bit after lunch at the buffet.
