Cuba
We have visited Cuba twice now. The first time was not a good experience so we were hesitant to return. However last spring we decided to do a last minute one week 'get me away from here' trip and didn't really want to head back to the DR again so soon. So I found some good deals to Cuba and started doing some research on various resorts. Blau Colonial was getting some good reviews so we decided to give it a try. We were glad we did because this experience changed our view of Cuba, and it is now back on my list of places to revisit.
Blau Colonial
Cayo Coco Cuba
April 2006
My Star Rating:
4stars
We vacationed at the Blau Colonial Cayo Coco for one week April 16 23, 2006 and had a great time. Some areas of the Blau were 3 stars but others were 5 stars, but overall it was as good as the 4 star resorts weve visited in the DR. I should also mention that the weather the week we were there was great. The resort is also only 15 minutes from the Airport and when arriving late in the evening this for us was a bonus!
Grounds & Layout- The grounds and the layout of this resort were top notch. Nothing seemed too far away. Of course one section was closed for renovations so that might change once it is finished. The resort is set up like a little village and has a very quaint feel to it. The vegetation is very mature and there are lots of flowering bushes and trees lining the many walkways. The main pool area is very nice and in the center of the resort with the room buildings located around it. There were plenty of chairs to be had around the pool both in the sun and shade!
Room - We had booked a supersaver room and ended up with a very nice second floor room # 1434 in building 14 which was close to the buffet, lobby and beach. The room was a very good size with a 2-section bathroom with lots of shelf and closet space, and the best lighting weve had in a resort room yet. The safe was also included here. Although the water pressure was not the best there was plenty of hot water most of the time.
We were in a corner room with a wrap around balcony with nice wood chairs and table.
We even had a distant view of the ocean.
Pool - The pool here was a good size with plenty of loungers around. The problem with the loungers here is that there was no padding on the chairs. There also was no swim-up bar while we were there. There is another pool with a swim-up bar but that's in the section that's closed. At one end of the pool however is the Yarey bar/restaurant which was never too far away. Note however that the glasses are small so you may want to bring your own travel mugs.
Beach The beach for us was a little disappointing but it was very nice and had we not been to Punta Cana so many times before it probably would seem a lot nicer. It was however nice for swimming and for water sports since the crystal clear water was not too deep, and most days was very calm. But we found the sand quite difficult to walk through  and the beach in front of the Blau was not very wide. The only place on the beach for shade was under the hut buildings and they were taken up very early in the morning.
