Chapter Nine:
That night, Ali and Kevin still weren't an item, though Ali KNEW for sure that Kevin liked her.  But she still had no idea what to do with the information.  Cathy and Wes came later on in the evening, after, ahem, they were done doing, ahem, whatever it was they were doing.  Cathy tried to get Fred away from Ali, only to be ignored.  But Fred eventually left her alone when Kevin gave him a look that that made him want to crawl under his bed and hug his teddy bear.  But Ali and Kevin never really got around to dating yet.

The next day, Ali woke up to find an almost empty house.  She walked downstairs, and found Cathy [here we are, Cassie!] sitting in her favorite comfy blue chair, fully dressed, with her sunglasses on top of her head, where she usually put them (and asked where they were five minutes after she deposits them there).  Ali was groggy, cranky, and wearing  boxers and a t-shirt, while Cathy was fully awake and dressed to impress.  "Good morning, honey!" Cathy yelled at Ali as she walked down the stairs.

"Why are you awake and so perky this early?" Ali asked, half asleep.

"It's not early, it's nine-thirty."

"Than why am I awake?  I should be sleeping, not speaking.  I'm going back to bed," Ali said, turning around to face the stairs.

"No, you are not," Cathy said, jumping up from her spot and grabbing Ali by the arm before she could step up even one step.  "We are going to the mall."

"Again?  Why?  Malls give me a headache, why are we going to the mall again?"

"Because I have to get a birthday present for Rob," Cathy said bluntly.  "And I am NOT going alone."

"Rob?  Thomas?  Cath, I thought Wes didn't want you to see him anymore."

"I'm not seeing Wes anymore," Cathy said with the same amount of bluntness.

"You're WHAT?  I thought..."  Ali trailed off as she remembered how much Cathy had liked Rob, from the minute she saw him.  "Nevermind.  When are we leaving?"

~At the mall...

"Cathy, we have been in every store.  Can't you pick something yet?"

"Actually, no, right now I'm hungry."

"You're always hungry," Ali replied sarcastically.

"Yep, I know.  Remember in chorus, when Dan brought in those cookies, before the Christmas program?"

"Yeah," Ali laughed.  "You attacked those suckers like you were in a desert and they were water bottles."

"Yep.  And now I'm hungry.  Let's go, I want fries."

"Okay," Ali said as Cathy dragged her to the food court.

"So, I assume you're not dating the oldest Backstreet Boy yet," Cathy said in between french fries.

"No," Ali replied quietly.  "And keep your voice down, you want those teenyboppers wearing Kevin on their shirts to hear you?  I'll die in like, three seconds."

"Sorry, but from the way he was acting around you, I'd swear it."

"One can only hope.  Before you came, he was singing Sprung to me."

"That Nu Flavor song?"

"Yep, that's the one," Ali said, biting a fried mushroom.

"Ahhh."  Now is when Cathy started singing.  "You used to be this little girl around the way, but you've grown up and now...  what are you covering your ears for?"

"No reason, you just need some more singing lessons, that's all," Ali said, scrunching up her nose.

"Hey, I'm not that bad."

"I know, but you're no Kevin, that's for sure."

"And I thank my lucky stars every day because of that fact," Cathy said, sticking a fry into her mouth.

"Funny."

"I'm joking.  I do suppose I'm growing on him," Cathy said.  "After all, I do have to at least LIKE the guy you're gonna marry, right?"

At that point, they heard a voice behind them saying, "Marry?"
