These diagrams show the structure of the two main genera of Algarve ground orchids.
The three outer segments of the flower are sepals while the three inner segments are petals. The lowest middle petal forms the lip of the flower which provides a landing stage for the insect pollinators visiting the flower. The reproductive system is fused into a column usually enclosed in the hood of the flower. The anthers near the top of the column produce an mass of pollen called a pollinia while the stigma of the pistil forms a stigmatic surface at the base of the column.
