Alamo Chapter

The Alamo Chapter was chartered in 1982, with 12 charter members. The Charter Chairman was Malcolm J. Goodman. Officers elected were Benny B. Scroggin Chairman, Paul E. Brown Secretary/ Treasurer, and Antonio C. Vargas Sergeant-At-Arms.

OUTSTANDING EVENTS: The most outstanding event the chapter has participated in was the support of families of men injured in the Green Ramp accident at Fort Bragg. On March 23, 1994, while attempting to land at Pope Air Force Base, an F-16 fighter collided in mid-air with a C-130 cargo plane forcing the pilot and passenger to eject. The fighter then went on to collide with a C-141 on the tarmac. The resulting explosion and fireball killed twenty-four soldiers and wounded one hundred others as they waited at Green Ramp to board planes for a training jump. On 24 March the twenty Fort Bragg soldier patients selected for burn treatment arrived at Fort Sam Houston, Brooke Army Medical Center. The 82d Airborne Division sent a liaison team to Fort Sam Houston to take care of their families' needs. The Alamo Chapter under the direction of Chapter Chairman, Ed Asbury, working out of the Fort Sam Houston Family Assistance Center, provided private transportation services, toilet articles, and monetary funds to the families of the burn victims. Two months after the accident only one paratrooper remained critical, while the others were either in satisfactory condition or convalescing at home. Prior to the liaison team returning to Fort Bragg the Chapter hosted a party for the team at the Fort Sam Houston NCO Club. Lt. Gen. Henry H. Shelton XVIII Airborne Corps, MG William M. Steele, division commander, division Command Sgt. Maj. Steven R. Slocum, thanked the chapter for their support. For more information go to: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/books/green-ramp/popec.htm
