Welcome
to the World of A.I.S.L.
In 1967, the American
International School was founded by a group of parents from the U.S. Embassy as
a private coeducational institution offering an American style educational
program for students in the nursery-Pre-Kindergarten program to grade 12.
Accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools for grades
K-8, in 1999, the school is recognized as an American sponsored Overseas
School. In addition, AISL is recognized by the government of Togo.
We are a small school with a current enrollment of 55 students in grades
N/Pre-Kindergarten to grade 12. Class sizes allow faculty to individualize
instruction and offer a unique approach to students who speak French and
English. AISL uses a multi-grade classroom approach that recognizes the value
children get from associating with children of different ages. The K-8 average
class size ranges from 7-12 students with the largest class of 18 in grades
9-12. So the teacher is able to individualize, but the size affords enough peer
interaction to provide a lively dynamic atmosphere to the room. However, no
more than two or three grade levels are combined.
For High School students in grades 9-12 we offer the U. of Nebraska Independant
Learning Program. Upon completion of all course work as recommended by the U.
of N., students receive their U. of N. diploma at the graduation ceremony. Our
students are prepared to continue their education at the under-graduate level
in colleges throughout the United States or colleges in the students' home
country.
School age children of all nationalities are welcome at AISL. We have a deep
commitment to multi-cultural appreciation and cooperation. Our current teaching
staff is multi-national promoting mutual understanding between Americans and
the people of other countries. The current faculty and students enrolled at
AISL come from over 20 different countries. Diversity is a valuable resource of
our school.
The content of our academic program is American and the language of instruction
is English with required classes in the French language for students in grade
N/Pre-K to grade 8, the official language of Togo. AISL offers an extensive
after-school program to all students enrolled as well as students from other schools
in the community. The activities program is an extension of the academic
program and is offered from 2:15 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. The activities are free for
all students.
AISL faculty is commited to school and family partnerships. Our faculty, staff
and students work very hard to make AISL a success. The teaching staff
continues the tradition of finding new ways to help our students to see and
think, and deal creatively with problems and opportunities they will have
throughout their lives. The acquisition of skills and knowledge are a part of
everyday instruction and school philosophy.
