Vehicle engines
Vehicle engines are one of the sources of the pollutants, they   produce carbon  monoxide, oxides of nitrogen,  hydrocarbons and lead  compounds. Those gases  called exhaust gases. Carbon monoxide is a  poisonous gas. Hydrocarbons causes  little damage but in the presence of  sunlight they from photochemical smog. Nitrogen  oxides play an  important part in the formation of photochemical smog, the depletion  of  the ozone layer and the formation of acid rain. There are many cars in  Hong  Kong,  but have no suitable to deal with the air pollution, so the  problem becomes serious.

Power station and industries
Air pollutants also came from coal-fired power plants and industries. They produce some major pollutants, like Sulphur-dioxides, Nitrogen dioxides and coal ash. When burning the sulphur-containing coal, even with the lowest level, it still produces significant amounts of SO2.Combination of Nitrogen and Oxygen at high temperature in the power plant, make the air contains acidic sustains. Those gases are harmful to the people, plants and the living things.

Urbanization
Certain development of modern Hong Kong must cause air pollution.  The  weather in Hong Kong become hotter and hotter, it was because the urbanization.  Without proper environmental management and adequate pollution control measure,  the environment will progressively deteriorate and become unsustainable. The place  where has many commercial buildings or shops, are the most pollute location, like  Causeway Bay, Mongkok.

Pollution from Mainland China
Mainland China located in northern Hong Kong. Many investments are In Guangdong province, there are more and more industries have been created. But those industries are not followed the environmental regulations, so those areas are full of dust. When the wind flow to the south, it also means flow to Hong Kong, those air with dust and acidic sustains flow to Hong Kong, the situation is serious especially in winter, when the wind flow from the North. It is very hard for Hong Kong to prevent this kind of air pollution.
