The history of the, Order of the Arrow. Is a very colorful, and in many ways mysterious. The order was originally founded in the summer of 1915 on Treasure Island, in the Philadelphia Council. The order was created by Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson both men were 24 years old.
They found the idea for the order in a book, which explained a camp society that had been established to put in to effect traditons and ideals from year to year. Both Goodman and Edson agreed they wanted to start a similar society at their camp. After speaking with Ernest Thompson Seton, they finalized their plans to base this order of service on the legends and tradtions of the Lenni Lenape or Deleware Indians.
As a result of this decision the came upon the creation of a simple yet effective ceremony that led to the end product, a brotherhood, based upon cheerful service to the communtity and scouting alike.
