Anne's animated face is simplified, but we know from her diary what a complete person she was. Many Holocaust victims seem like mere numbers because even their names are not known. The Yad Vashem is trying to learn the names of all of the Jewish Holocaust victims. The project is only about halfway done, after all of these years. ![]()
Name:
Anne
FrankYou can imagine why this is the case. Many were picked up during mass raids, for instance at markets and train stations. Such a person's friends and family were likely also taken, before or after his raid. Perhaps his entire personal network was killed. Old co-workers after the war would guess that he was killed, hope that he was not, but want to put the war and its pains behind them. If they later face that he had died, they could, even now, wishfully assume that his family named him. His name would thus be lost.
There were also non-Jews singled out for deportation and death with difficulties ever getting named, for instance homosexuals/gay people. Gypsies probably also have difficulties ever being named.
