Anne's Tree Will Come Down After All

The tree Anne loved to look out on during her two years in hiding will be chopped down after all. There had been a long permit process to take it down because of the tree's many problems. The permit was granted, but then they were convinced to take a further look at extraordinary measures they might take to save the tree (see 12 Oct entry below). Unfortunately, they found out that the tree is very unstable, only 28% of the trunk is healthy. The tree weighs about 27 tons and would damage buildings if it did fall. The owner of the property the tree stands on would be liable for such damages.
The tree will be cut down on the 21st. Watch via their webcam. Remember, the sun rises over the Netherlands several hours before it reaches America. I don't know what time the felling will be. One news report said first the branches will be cut, then the trunk; it won't be a "timberrrr!" moment.
The tree was about 150 years old and will one day be replaced by a sapling raised via a graft of the tree. AP news
