During her two years in hiding, Anne looked out at the big chestnut
tree and found inspiration and comfort in the sight of it. The tree
was about 100 years old back when she was acquainted with it.
Of course it is much older now. It has become infested with
a fungus and with moths and has been slowly dying. The Amsterdam city council
authorized cutting it down. The date for the felling was not in the
news stories, but it will be weeks from now, not hours from now.
(see reports from BBC and
CNN)
You can see the tree while it is still alive
from the webcam the Anne Frank House set up in the house across the
garden from the secret annexe. This is in Amsterdam, so
if you're viewing from America in daylight and it is dark there, don't
be too surprised.
