The city

Manizales

Situated in the central area of western Colombia, along the Andes Cordillera, 300 kms west of Bogota and 170 kms south of Medellin, Manizales, capital city of the department of Caldas, together with the cities of Risaralda and Quindio, constitute the well-known coffee region. From its geographical situation, Manizales is a privileged city where you will enjoy a pleasant climate, most beautiful landscapes and very colourful sunsets.

Prior to the arrival of the Spaniards, the native population in the area lived off farming, hunting, fishing, textiles and trading. The vestiges they left behind testify to simplified techniques employed in the making of gold, copper and terra cotta objects. Later, the area was visited by colonists from the area of Antioquia who settled there permanently. Founded in 1849, Manizales today has a population of nearly 400,000 inhabitants.
