STP Information

São Tomé e Príncipe is the smallest African nation. It is found directly on the equator about 200 miles off the coast of Gabon, Central Africa. It is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), and does not need Daylight Savings Time. The clock to the left always displays the current time in STP, so if you ever need to know, check here or check www.worldtimeserver.com, the site where I found this clock. (continued below)

Two main islands make up the nation of STP, along with numerous smaller uninhabited islets scattered along the coast. Volcanic in origin, these islands boast some pretty steep mountains; São Tomé is only about 20 x 30 miles big with a 6,640 ft. peak on it, while Príncipe is only about 4 x 10 miles big with a 3,110 ft. peak on it. The islands were uninhabited until the Portuguese discovered them in the 1400's. The Portuguese promptly populated the islands with slaves from their mainland colonies (primarily Angola) to work on plantations that produced the most sugar cane in the world in the 1800's and the most cocoa in the world in the early 1900's. Both crops are still produced in abundance today, and though independent since 1975, Sao Tomeans still speak Portuguese as their principal language.
