Speck's Little Blog

A brief outline of the life of a cat named Speck, who has travelled all over Canada.

Hm! Time flies! Apologies all around.

Adam's finally gone so I get the computer to myself for once. He's been tinkering but fortunately has not messed up any of my settings (I need my mouse to work just so...)

I've been noticing a couple of troubling things. One is that my Rogers email has been used pretty regularly as a spam source. As in: people are receiving spam from my address. There isn't anything I can do about it so I've had to resort to a totally separate account. I'm hitting Adam up to let me onto his brainrub system, which is where I think I'd prefer this website to live also. We'll see. Very frustrating. I mean: I'm a cat, for god's sake! I couldn't spam if I wanted to.

The other is that there are suddenly lots of stupid spammers out there pitching stock scams. So I thought I'd spread the word (at least my accountant's word): Anytime you see an anonymous tip for a stock? I'm willing to bet (and again, I'm a cat) that the stock actually ends in the indicator ".OB". The email you get won't say that, they'll just say the short stock name, but go look it up on finance.yahoo.com or something. Guaranteed: it'll come up as saying "'PCLI' is no longer valid. It has changed to PCLI.OB." (To use a recent example.)

These are commonly called "pump and dump" scams, where some malicious user out there thinks they can make a quick $10,000 by sending spam to thousands of strangers, watch the stock go up, then sell at an alleged profit.

For those who are interested this is the exact same scheme perpetrated by the owners and traders at Enron before the big shutdown took place, only of course it was done using their own stock, but the principle is the same. You should definitely ignore these emails. And as I mentioned before, commodities and securities are a much better bet these days anyway. Come onnnnnn wheat! :)

Oh! I have to go again. My new phone takes some getting used to.

More as it happens. Sorry for any spam you may have received.
