I woke up, strapped to a table, pain and euphoria simultaneously running through my mind. It was hard to think - like my head was full of fur. I hated being sedated, particularly the part where I woke up. I struggled slightly, pulling at whatever was holding me down. The leather strap on my left arm was the loosest - the ones on my right arm or legs werent going to move - so I tried to twist my hand out of it. The mumbling of human speech tore into my ears, driving my skull through another blast of pain. The humans walked closer, and a door opened and closed. I stopped moving.
"So thats what they look like," one human articulated. The voice of the man who had ordered my operation. I began to pick at the strap over my left arm, keeping my movements subtle.
"Yes, sir," another person said. "This is the first time weve managed to contain one of our subjects in this form. Hes quite impressive." This voice held the eager awareness and astonishment with the world that I associated with scientists. "Weve already finished with the first step of the experiment. The next group of labs will begin as soon as he wakes up."
The voice called sir took a few steps forward, standing very close to me. "A magnificent beast," he murmured. "How long til then?"
"He should wake up within the next hour."
"Ill take this from a security standpoint," a third human said, authority in his voice, stepping forward until he was right next to the table I laid on. With how loud his footfalls were, his build had to be much heavier than the other two. "Im head of security here, so thats my job. I have to say keeping a wolfman is not the safest experiment. And now you want to wake him up?" He tapped a hand onto my muzzle. I struggled not to sneeze, succeeding, barely. "The wolf already is," he muttered.
With that, I shot my eyes open and ripped my arm free, pulling at the security guards arm. A knife was already in his hand, off-blue metal shining in a beam of fluorescent lights. I pulled down, answered by the dull snap of his arm dislocating.
He cried out, cursing. I pulled the knife out of his grip, gritting my teeth as the blade cut into my skin with a sensation like fire. With a smooth slice through heavy leather, I freed my right arm and pulled my legs out from under their restraints.
The security guard was sprawled against the wall, holding his arm loosely, his face screwed up in agony. His gun, a semiautomatic, was on the floor, with the safety off and the clip unloaded. No danger there.
The scientist was lying on the floor, unarmed, crawling toward an exit.
The man who was called a leader, on the other hand, had picked up a bloodstained surgical tool, waving it at me. He stopped and stared at the dagger quivering in the wall only an inch from his face, a drop of blood trailing to the hilt before it dripping to the ground.
I darted out of the room, glancing down two identical corridors, before dashing to the left. Four humans, security guards, showed up. A few of them pulled out guns, aiming at me.
The shots ricocheted off the door as scurried behind it, stepping into a well lit room. Locking the door behind me and flicking off the lights, I stood next to the entry, my back against the wall. The room held no exits, no windows. With one option gone, the other side of the flight or fight instinct kicked in.
The first security guard met a chair leg to the back of his neck, then dropped, crumpling to the floor. I dropped the pole with a clatter. The next guard entered the room already firing, bullets whizzing harmlessly over my head - I had already dropped to the floor, swiping his legs out from under him. I then rose, kicking the gun out of his hands before slicing at his side, carving five slashes into his uniform. He wheeled across the floor before hitting a wall with a heavy thud. Body armor had stopped my claws from cutting into skin, but it didnt do anything about the force of impact.
I dropped to all fours as the two remaining guards opened fire, shooting through drywall. More shots blasted through the wall before the slow clicking of empty guns being fired replaced the flash and bang of bullets. Rays of light flickered into the room, highlighting plaster dust. I stayed still, holding my breath and trying to ignore the cut on my hand. It was burning.
"Hes toast," one of them said.
"Sure. But lets call the office first. You cant be too careful with these freaks," said a second. "Worst case scenario, at least we dont have to scrape him off the floor."
A blast of static echoed through the room. "Weve got Fenris holed up in research lab Gamma, second floor. Requesting backup."
There was a loud beep. "Alright. Were sending in a squad and authorizing an attack. But dont kill him - hes worth more than your entire team." With a squawk, the radio cut out. There was a heavy silence.
"Well, I hope they dont take this out of our paych-"
I darted out of the room, running at the humans. One guard brought his gun up, and three clicks rang out before he realized he was out of ammunition. The other pulled a dagger out. I glided to my right as the sharp edge whirled past my face. She moved to unsheathe a second blade. I grabbed both of them by the side of their head, then slammed them together. The resulting thump was strangely satisfying.
I dropped the two, dropping to all fours as I ran down the halls. The next right held a hall with a door at the end. Above it, a red sign glowed : EXIT. I kicked the door open with ease, flinching at the sound of an alarm going off. The spindly metal of a fire escape led to the ground. I climbed down -
