Although stamps were issued for every year of this decade, this site begins with the stamps issued when the Philippines declared its independence from the United States of America on July 04, 1946.
This was a decade of turmoil. The Philippines was under Japanese sphere of influence for half of the decade. Philatelic issues were reprints or reproduction of previous themes. During this said era, most stamps issued by the Americans were overprinted with Japanese calligraphy.
A number of stamps, beginning
December 30, 1946, issued during this inclusive period featured the National Hero, Jose Rizal. Definitive stamps, issued for the first time in three series, featured monument such as the Bonifacio Monument issued on
March 23, 1947 and other scenic spots. A Jose Rizal Definitive was also issued on
June 19, 1948.
Most other issues were commemorative in nature featuring the inauguration of presidents, anniversary of World War II events, as well as other notable historical events.
Special Issues include the FAO Conference Stamps issued in
February 23, 1948, the Silver Jubilee of the Philippine Boy Scouts and the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Postal Union.
Postage Dues stamps were issued on
October 20, 1947. Many of the stamps were printed with O.B. or G.O. to denote official use. Some of these official hand stamps, usually in a variety of colors and styles were either typewritten or even handwritten.
A Booklet Pane of 6 (2X3) was issued on
August 19, 1949. It featured, once again, Jose Rizal.
Stamps issued during the Japanese occupation shall be afforded a separate section in the near future. For the time being the purpose of this site is to attempt to list all the stamps and postal stationery issued by the country since July 04, 1946 onward.
