My
name is Arnold Batiste. I was born in the small town of Church Point Louisiana
on November 18, 1967. I have one older and one younger brother. Upon my 8th
birthday, my mother married her high school sweet heart. Soon after, we moved
from the “country” to the big city of Houston Texas. This was truly a
culture shock for me. I quickly learned that people in the “big city” are
nearly as friendly as those from the “country.” During our first week of
school, we were involved in 3 different fights against gangs of guy. The only
thing we were guilty of was being new to the school and city.
Since
I am here to write about it, I obviously survived growing up in the big city.
Upon graduating from high school, I enrolled at Microcomputer Technology
Institute. MTI is a technical vocation school, which teaches it students the
fundamentals of electronics and microprocessors. After graduating from MTI, I
enlisted in the United States Army as an Electronics Communications Technician.
On December 27, 1987 I arrived at my first and last duty assignment, Patch
Barracks in Stuttgart Germany. After my enlistment in the US Army ended (June
27, 1991), I began working as a contractor for BBN Corporation (BBN is currently
known as Verizon Communications which was created through the purchase of BBN by
GTE and the subsequent merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE). My job involved
monitoring and controlling DISA (Defense
Information Systems Agency) Europe’s Wide Area Computer Networks, which
utilized BBN PSNs (Packet Switching Nodes).
After my first 10
months working for BBN as a Network Controller, I was offered and accepted a
position in the Field Services Department of BBN. This position involved
troubleshoot, maintaining, and upgrading various configurations of Cisco Routers
(2500, 4000, 7000, 7206, 7507, and 7513 series), WellFleet Routers, and BBN
Packet-Switches (C3 and C10), Mail Host (C70), Terminal Access Controllers (TAC)
on the DDN (Defense Data Network) and IPR Networks.
In
July of 1996 I was promoted to the position of Senior Field Services Technician.
One year later, I was selected to be the Field Services European Department
Manager. Currently, I oversee the
actions of four technicians who provide hardware maintenance support on three
Wide Area Networks for DISA Europe.
Of
all of my accomplishments and promotions, the one that I am most proud of is my
most recent one. On July 02, 1999, I began dating Zetra Williams. Jade,
Zetra’s nine-year-old daughter immediately adopted me as her father.
Thus, promoting me to the ranks of fatherhood.
Zetra and I are now engaged and are planning to get married in March of this year.
Although
I’ve been working with the Internet for the past 8 years, I realized that
I’ve only “scratched the surface.” I’m taking this class so that I learn
more about the power of the Internet and the tools used to access it.
