Late afternoon of Sunday August 1st 2004, several eye witnesses in the Warden Hill area of Luton saw a tiny, un-payloaded, un-parachuted fully expendable craft streaking fiercely upwards into a clear blue sky at near-sonic speeds...

Is it a bird...!? Is it a plane...!?

No, upon successful recovery of its lower stage several minutes after the initial skyward boost, the object turned out to be a small rocket designated as 'AA-Ascent-4' launched by the AA Institute as part of its continuing test initiative dubbed the 'Rocketry & Aerospace Program'!

The mission was launched using a C-6-5 rated solid fuel motor, using a backup wired ignition system (after an unsuccessful attempt at testing the prototype 'remote launch ignition facility'). Based on the rocket manufacturer's projections, Ascent 4 set a new altitude record of 2,000 feet - a highly aspired flight milestone ever since Ascent 3 achieved 1,000 feet ground altitude exactly one year earlier.
