Scribes, painters, and sculptors of the Maya court, often relatives, even siblings of the ruler, created an astonishing record of elite Mayan life and world view in both text and image. Of all that they accomplished before the coming of the Europeans, only a relatively small sampling has survived. It includes stone monuments, murals, painted vases, jewelry, and other ornaments of high status, and portions of four screenfold codices, or books, of plaster coated bark paper. Content of Maya hieroglyphic writing ranges from simple name tags or objects to chronicles of the lives and exploits of kings.

Above, map of the Yucatn Peninsula.  S&L cruised to here and visited the Mayan ruins at Chichn Itz and Tulum in the summer of 1995.

To the left, friend Rick fancies himself to be an indirect descendent of at least one of the original Mayan scribes and Artisans.  (Photo taken 10/10/98)
