As the trade, shipbuilding and fishing industry grew
in Cutler Harbor in 1847, a lighthouse was built at
the harbor entrance on Little River Island.
A stone keeper's house and tower were built and a
fifth order Fresnel lens installed in 1855.
Rebuilt in 1876, the cast iron 41 foot tower still remains.
A Victorian wood-frame keepers house
replaced the stone structure in 1888.
Becoming one of the most important defense sites on the coast
two 1000 foot communication towers were
built at the Cutlers naval base in 1960,
and provide communication with the Navy submarine
fleet in Artic, Europe and the North Atlantic.
Automated in 1975 and the Fresnel lens was removed on 1980.
