Quod

Quod is a game designed by G. Keith Still. It is played on an 11-by-11 grid with the four corners missing. At the start of the game, each player has 20 attacking pieces and 6 blocking pieces. The objective of the game is to place your attacking pieces on the grid so that they form a square (called a quod). The player who can make a quod first wins the game. The square itself can be of any size and orientation. If after all attacking pieces are played, no player can make a quod, the player with more blocking pieces wins the game. If each player has the same number of blocking pieces (or if neither has any), the game is a draw.

The first computer version of the game was developed by Michael J. Mefford (PC Magazine, June 25, 1996). The computer's play in my game follows his basic strategy, with some modifications of my own.

It's a great strategic game. You'll enjoy it.

How to Play
  • On each turn, you place an attacking piece on the board. Optionally, before placing an attacking piece, you can place any number of blocking pieces, as long as you still has one. Click once inside a circle on the board to put a blocking piece there. To put an attacking piece, click again at the same circle. After you are running out of blocking pieces, a single click will place an attacking piece. You can only play your blocking pieces before you play an attacking piece. After you make your attacking move, the computer will make its move.

  • The game is over after a quod is made, either by you or the computer. There will be lines connecting the four corners of the quod, and the score between you and the computer is updated. To start a new game, click the button at the bottom of the applet.

  • By default, you move first in each new game. You can let the computer makes the first move using the checkbox at the bottom of the applet.

By the way, your attacking pieces are the blue balls, and the computer's are the reds. Green balls are blocking pieces.
