Buford's Page
This page links you to some stories about Plymouth's poet, philosopher, and urban adventurer, Buford B. Pig.
Buford came to my Lapeer doorstep in 1994, on loan from a 13-year old Plymouth girl. To show her that Buford was in good hands, each month I mailed her a story about Buford's adventures in his new hometown of Lapeer.
As part of each story, I included photographs as the illustrations. The stories of what happened during the photo shoots are often funnier than his fictional adventures.
When I moved to Plymouth two years later, Buford did, too, and his adventures helped introduce Plymouth to my daughter, who had just turned 13. His innocent personality also made him the perfect vehicle by which to deliver some light political satire in the local newspapers.
Through his adventures, Buford "robbed" a bank and sat as a judge. He bowled and played baseball. He pitches pennies on downtown Plymouth's perfect penny pitching spot and was the city's original poet-in-exile, having been chased out of town by a group of normally mild mannered poets after he read a remarkably bad poem at an open mike night. And every so often, he talks to the ghosts of the city's founders.
So many people have asked about the little guy that I am offering this spot on my web site. I hope you enjoy the stories.
