SCAN-PRO34 Fully modified scanner This item is brought to you by popular demand. You see, the law has been changed so that it is now illegal to sell a new scanner that /could/ be modifyable, so the manufacturers have completely changed their radios. There are now absolutely NO scanners that you can go to a store and buy TODAY that get cellular telephone frequencies, or that you can EVEN HAVE A CHANCE of modifying to receive cellular frequencies. This has been true for over 7 years now. The only way to listen to cellular telephones is to obtain an older scanner; one that receives cellular frequencies, or was modified to do so.

This Pro-34 scanner was the top of the line model at Radio Shack until 1994, when it was declared illegal. (It also retailed for $399!!) It features 200 channels that you can program with any frequencies you like. The original frequency coverage was:

*Note-There was a mod to change the 30-54Mhz coverage to 66-88 mhz coverage. This was disabled but we can add a switch for you to turn it on and off if you like. We reccomend leaving the mod disabled, as 30-54 Mhz contains the cordless telephone frequencies.

Here are the specifics on the other modifications:

1) This pro-34 is actually like two scanners in one! Our technician has replaced the stock I.F. Filter with a special wider replacement. The bandpass width was specially selected to enable analog cellular reverse channel data to be received, yet still leaving the scanner fully functional for listening to cellular, cordless, police, fire, etc. audio. This feature makes this scanner perfect for a cellular DDI as well as a general 'police scanner'.

2) In addition, our technician has added a discriminator tapoff jack. This allows full-range data from the scanner to be sent directly to your soundcard or other decoding equipment. This allows the scanner to be used as a Cellular DDI, pager decoder, or MDT (Mobile Data Terminal) decoder, with the help of a computer and some free shareware.

3) Our discriminator tapoff features a static electricity protection circuit. The average hobbyist does not often concern himself with static protection, but at Hacker Central, we want our custmers to enjoy our products for as long as possible. This exclusive circuit protects your scanner from harmful static discharges. Without this circuit, if you were to touch your scanner's discriminator tapoff port on a dry day, you could discharge thousands of volts of static electricity and blow out your radio!

This is not a 'yard sale special'! This scanner was purchased from a retired police officer who maintained the unit on a regular basis. The unit is not abused at all (it was not even used as a portable, just a base scanner)
It comes with the following accessories:

A)Heavy Duty belt clip (can be removed)

B)Battery holder (stores 6 AA alkaline or Ni-Cd batteries)
This scanner uses plain AA batteries, not expensive custom Ni Cd battery packs. This ensures that the unit will be inexpensive to operate, and you will always have a power source available. You COULD, however, use AA Ni-Cd batteries if you like. This scanner supports in-unit charging! This means that you can load the battery holder with Ni-Cds, and leave them inside of the scanner all the time. The unit will charge the batteries internally.

C) Original full-range antenna.
This antenna covers the full 30Mhz to 1 Ghz (1000Mhz) range. This antenna is perfectly suited for picking up police, fire, medical, and other public service agencies. If you plan to use this unit as a portable scanner, this is the perfect antenna.

E) Hacker Central's exclusive 800-900 mhz right angle scanner antenna.
This great antenna is included with this Pro-34 package! It is a right angle antenna, which means that you can lay the scanner down flat on a table and still have the antenna upright. This antenna has been peaked for optimum performance in the 800-900 Mhz range, and has fantastic reception capabilities in the Cellular frequency range. F) Power supply. This is the official Radio Shack Power supply for this scanner, model # 273-1651. It provides 1/2 amp of power to run the Pro-34. This power supply can also recharge nicads inside the charger!

G) Computer interface cable. This accessory completes the Pro-34 package. It is a shielded audio cable that connects to the scanner's discriminator port and the sound card's line-in jack on the computer.
This brings the full-bandwidth audio directly into the computer for decoding.

Since the Pro 34 also makes a perfect portable scanner, it is important to know some of the scanner's features:

-200 Channels in 10 banks of 20 channels each. You can lock or unlock a bank with just one button. You could program all of the fire department channels into one bank, for example, and then turn them all on or off as a group.
-Switchable Backlighted screen. Allows nighttime use.
-Switchable keypad lockout. Prevents unintentional keypresses, especially when operating as a handheld or when clipped to your belt.
-Switchable delay function. Allows you to catch more replies by waiting on an active channel for 2 seconds after a transmission.
-Top mounted Scan and Manual buttons. Puts the two most used buttons on the top of the scanner for easy access when scanning (especially when belt-mounted)
-Selectable scan speed.
-Switchable priority circuit. Allows you to 'keep an eye' one one particular frequency, even when another one is currently active.
-Search function. Allows you to search for new frequencies, will automatically search through a range that you specify. Great for discovering new things to listen to!
-Switchable lockout. Prevents your listening from being interrupted by garbage transmissions.

The rarity of this scanner, combined with its superior performance and features, usually results a $350-$450 price tag on this scanner in the used market, and thats when it can be found, and of course that is with no modifications!
This particular Pro-34 has had the advantage of a whole suite of modifications, as well as all necessary accessories.

There are power cables available at Radio Shack to power this scanner from the 12 volt cigarette lighter jack in your car, as well as external antennas for both the auto and home.
