In the Catcher and The Rye There were some big differences and also some things that are the same in the 1950's and the 2000's. The differences consists of the drinking age and many things about his life that are different then today's. Then you have similarities such as like hard times in life as well as problems with girls. These are just a few of the differences and some similarities in the book from now to then.
The differences from then to now are pretty much little stuff. The biggest thing that you find today is that you do not find that people send their kids off to school as much as the people did back then. Also you find that if you are sent away to school you are usually a good student and you would try to do your best because if you go to a school like that it cost a lot of money. There is also anther big difference that is that in today's world you do not find that a lot of kids are getting thrown out of five schools. In today's world you may fail a class hear or there but you usually do not fail out of school that many times. If you would have failed out of school that many time your parents would think that why should they send you away to school and waste all their money. The last big difference is that Holden thought that he looked so much older then everybody. This has his mind set on that he can buy alcohol because he has been told that he looks older. He also thinks that he looks a lot older because he has a streak of gray hair. All these things make him seem that he is older and can buy alcohol at bars and it does work. At one bar it does work though and he is very happy. This would never work in today's world because they would card you and that makes it even harder to buy drinks. If you are not 21 then you are not allowed to buy and if you are caught with a fake I.D. then you are even in more trouble. Those are the main differences in the 1950's compared to the 2000's.
The similarities in the 1950's and now are that we all have trouble with our parents no mater how good of a kid you are. Holden was going to have a lot of word with his parents when they found out that he was kicked out of anther school. Anther similarity between no and then are that we all have trouble with girls. We all have our fair share of fights with our girlfriend but that happens with all of us. When Holden gets into trouble with Jane he feels that she will be corrupted by stradelater. Holden also has to deal with smoking and drinking like most kids today in high school. The bad thing about Holden is that he falls into these traps and ends up getting caught up in the drinking and smoking. These thing also have consequences like they did back then like now you get grounded and same with back then but you could also have many things worse if your parents see fit though. Like in the book Holden also has to deal with getting help with his problems from somebody and that is hard to do if that person does not connect with you. Like Holden does he goes through many people to find the write person to help him and he finally find s that person in the end. That person was Mr. Antolini that was his former English teacher. They seemed to connect with each other so hold learned a lot from his old English teacher and that straighten him out in the long run. Those would be the main points that stand out in the 1950's and now.
As you can see there were many point that are treated the same and also different back in the 1950's compared to the2000's. These things are what makes the times different and also the same in many ways. As you have read there are things like drinking and smoking that we all deal with but yet there are things that most kids do not have to deal with. Thosethings are like dealing with going away to high school and getting kicked out of six schools. As you have read those are the similarities and differences that have taken place between the years 1950's and 2000's.
