Magnetic Fields

What are Magnetic Fields?

There has long been a health concern about the effects of certain electrical equipment and power lines. These electrical and magnetic fields can be measured using electronic test equipment. It has also been found that some methods of house wiring, electrical equipment or wiring faults can cause magnetic fields. This is measured in Europe as nanotesla (nT) and North America as milligauss (mG).

How does it affect me?

It is thought that these elevated fields within the home aggravate, or may even cause a number of chronic ill health problems.

Opinions vary about what is a safe level, Powerwatch UK say that below 10 nT / 0.1mG would be something to aim for but would look to see at least the 30nT / 0.3 mG. Exposure limit endorsed by the US National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement is 200nT / 2mG.

When we rest and sleep in order to recharge and repair our bodies these fields may reduce our natural ability to heal ourselves so it is important to make sure magnetic fields are limited in bedrooms or other places that you spend time. Magnets are used for healing, the problem is with magnetic fields caused by the frequency of the electrical supply.

How can I identify a problem?

Electrical wires in loops or coils, like transformers or motors, cause the magnetic fields.

It is possible to hire test meters from Powerwatch or have a professional survey of your property.

Details of a survey that provides a measurement of these fields in a building can be found on the internet at www.geocities.com/autoworker2, then look up HomeCheck.

What can I do to limit Magnetic Fields?

A qualified electrician can rectify electrical faults but it is difficult to shield against them as they can travel through walls and floors. Not only TV sets but portable/mains music systems and even bedside alarm clock may be a problem. Keep these away from the place you sleep and never use an electric blanket.
