Profitability (a fair return to the producers) is a key element of sustainability. A wide ranging dialogue is needed among farmers, processors, scientists, environmentalists, and the interested public to develop sustainable systems that provide a fair return to growers, reasonable prices to consumers, and environmental effects that are acceptable to the public. Substantial changes in our ideas of what constitutes fair return and reasonable prices may be needed as we get a better of what is required for agriculture to be sustainable. Organic farming, reduced input farming, and precision farming are all key parts of developing sustainable systems. All involve substituting knowledge for some of the material and energy inputs used in conventional farming systems. On farm research and public input are necessary parts of developing new systems.
Zero waste manufactoring is something we need to consider in this area of developing sustainable farming systems in a sustainable society. Click here for some thoughts on zero waste systems.
