TEAMWORK...
If we could all do the work of many men, life would be a whole lot easier. No need to go to other places and have them make, repair, prepare, help you with things. Services would be unimportant since one would have the knowledge and time to do everything. But this brings me onto the idea of Division of Labor, an idea usually associated with economics. (Sorry, just had to throw that in, I am a business major afterall.)
Without getting too much into academic-related stuff (for the lack of a better word), it would be great to know all those skills, but none of us have the patience, let alone time to do that. So, this is where specialization comes in. All of us have certain things that we are interested in usually skills or talents that make us stand out from the rest. Out of the pool of people with talents some are better than others. Even at this rank, they are still even further classified by skill through position and talent. Obviously by position, forwards, defensemen, goaltenders, coaches, trainers, scouters, etc. From talent, the major league (NHL) and the minor leagues (AHL, ECHL, etc), and within each league stars, all-stars, and "common" players.
Sure every team has its star players, but what is that if
all the other players don't do their job? Should they be pampered thinking that whatever their mistakes are that the star will handle it? The star alone can't play for a full 60 minutes of play covering 6 positions. And what if there is a shorthanded situation? Of course the star is the one that brings the fans and gets paid the big bucks, but without the others, s/he would be nothing.
Eventhough the other players are overshadowed by the star player, they are an essential part of the player's success. And also the star also helps to elevate the other players abilites as well. Even just through example, which is why the captains and alternate captains of the team are usually the stars. Or if you wanted to get really technical with it, if a common player was put onto the same line as the star, even if s/he doesn't get any additional points, surely his/her plus/minus will go up.
Just like the star on a the big screen, it can't be done without the people behind the scenes. Not subtitutes, but compliments of each other.
