Chapter 17, April 25th, 1999

What an EXHILARATING walk I had yesterday!

One thing that I am sure that I have made clear about myself is my love of solitude. And one thing that I really like to do is to take walks. While walking, to just think, observe, and just think of any of the natural wonders that surround me. This often includes life, its aspects, future, etc. This is when I get my best philosophies, inspirations, and other creative ideas.

For those that do not know, I went to visit a friend in Philadelphia for two days and one night. It was very fun, but onto the real point of this chapter.

After leaving my friend's dorm builing (at University of Pennsylvania [NOT PennState!]), I had to get to my bus stop to get back to my own dorm building. Normally, I would take a taxi, and there are usually a line of cabs outside of her building, however, not today, since there were certain events going on.

Figuring that this might be the last time I would be in Philadelphia for a while, I decided to take a scenic approach. So, I WALKED.

I'll go into aspects of it soon, but this is the overall route, starting from left to right, the path indicated by the blue line.

Yeah, I guess it is pretty long, it was roughly a two-hour walk, though it didn't feel like it. I was walking rather slowly, gathering all the images. Here's just some things that I did (but not what I thought):

I crossed the South Street Bridge, which is over the Schullykill River. There were two observation decks there, which I took advantage of one. I just kinda stood there for a while.... looking at everything.... but really observing the traffic and the river...

I thought about staying straight, and going through South Street, but then thought better of it. Instead, I walked northeast, and passed through an old, but really nice area. It seemed very well maintained, and was surprised that an area such as this even existed outside the historic district.

I got onto Market Street just so I can see the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. I visited it and took a tour earlier last semester, and learned plenty from it. During that trip, I also visited the Federal Reserve for the second time, although I did not go there yesterday (it is on 6th and Market, too out of the way from the bus stops).

Most people would just cut through City Hall, however, I walked AROUND it to see the McClellan statue surrected on the north side. Yes, I suppose I am a "Civil War buff," since I did learn much about it, inside and out, and a great deal on my own will.

The first bus stop is on 13th and Market, but I saw no point in staying there and waiting, so I continued east, making my way down the streets. I passed "The Gallery" and looked at it again. I was tempted to go to Chinatown, but it decided against it.

At this point, by sight-seeing was over, and kept walking down until I saw the bus I was looking for, just to prolong walking. Shortly, a bus came once I reached 9th Street.

Perhaps I am a walking fiend, but it was nice exercise, and one thing I realized was that I became quite fond of the city. I always known that I was a "City girl," and I've learned to love the "City of Brotherly Love." Had I more time, I would've re-visited the Theater District, Chinatown, the Federal Reserve, and the Franklin Institute. Oh well, I am happy that I did manage revisit Drexel University the day before.
