The name Ontario is generally thought to be derived from the Iroquois word Skanadario, meaning 'beautiful water.'

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ONTARIO

Ontario, covers 1.1 million sq km (413,000 sq mi).

It is called "The Land of a Thousand Lakes". There are about 250,000 lakes in Ontario and water covers about one-sixth of the province.

Three quarters of Ontario (807,000 sq km) is forested. Trees that can be found in Ontario include, white spruce, jack pine, aspen, birch, white and red pine, sugar maple, beech, yellow birch and red oak. In addition, you'll see black and white spruce, aspen, ash, hemlock, red maple and white cedar.

Canada's southern most point is in Ontario, on Lake Erie's Middle Island. At 41 deg. latitude, it's in line with northern California. Some of the plants and animals on the island are typical of a southern climate.

Ontario's over 167,000 registered First Nations people speak two main languages. Algonquian and Ojibway, who live throughout the province, and the Cree, who live mostly in the north, speak Algonquian. The Iroquois and the Hurons, who live in southern and eastern Ontario, speak Iroquoian.

Ontario is now home to more than 60 cultures, each retaining its languages and traditions.

The Canadian Shield covers two-thirds of Ontario. Its ancient rock contains many of the mineral deposits. Ontario provides 15 per cent of the world's nickel. The province also produces gold, copper, uranium, zinc and platinum, cobalt and silver.

To travel from Detroit, Michigan (in the United States), to Windsor, Ontario, you go south.

Ontario's mammals include Beaver, Bear (Black Bear, Polar Bear), Cottontail Rabbit, Coyote, Eastern Chipmunk, Groundhog, Lynx, Mink, Moose, Muskrat, Porcupine, Raccoon, Red Fox, Skunk, Snowshoe Hare, Squirrel (Gray Squirrel, Red Squirrel), Timber Wolf, Whitetailed Deer, and Woodland Caribou.

Common Birds include Blue Jay, Cardinal, Chickadee, Great Blue Heron, Great Horned Owl, House Sparrow, Loon, Mallard Duck, Redtailed Hawk, Robin, Ruffed Grouse, and Woodpecker (Downy, Hairy, Pileated).

And if you like fishing we have plenty of Bass (Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass), Coho Salmon, Maskinonge (Muskellunge), Northern Pike, Trout (Brook Trout, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Lake Trout), and Walleye.

One more interesting fact. The Americans who claim they have never lost a war, were defeated by us in the war of 1812. I guess it has been kept a secret in the States.
