Looking north, downstream, at a small beaver pond with little water left, exposing mud ranging from very shallow to waist-to-shoulder deep, patched with a thin carpet of vegetation. Perhaps the mud was deeper further out in some places, but I didn't want to bother wading into the mire to investigate at the time. I had never tried out that area, but it was tempting! I was able to tread lightly on the surface in some spots, with it feeling like walking on top of a mattress. I believe that there were many more places like that, which I hadn't seen, due to the extremely dry summer! The beaver dike, that holds the water back when things aren't so dry, is all grown over with willows.
