Quicksand Along Shuswap River North Of Sugar Lake

Sunday July 22'nd, 2001

On the downstream side of the inside of a bend in the Shuswap River, I found an area where the sand is deposited loosely, creating quicksand! Unfortunately, the deepest spot here was only around waist deep. But, anyways, this is REAL QUICKSAND, made of sand and water, and if I remain sunk in one spot for too long without continuously agitating it, the sand settles, the water runs out, and I can get stuck in packed sand which could take at least half an hour or more to work/dig myself out of!!!

A little over a month after these pix and video were taken, I found a second area much further upstream which had one tiny area with quicksand that sucked me down just past my waist to my buoyancy point, with no bottom to be felt!!! But, once it was disturbed, it settled back into regular packed sand. But, bars/banks containing quicksand are continuously being created and destroyed with the rise and fall of the river year after year!
