Large Meadow West Of Grizzly Hill

Monday September 14'th, 1998

This is a large marshy area, with sedge grass and shrubs such as willow and (bog? or swamp?)birch surrounded by bush and old clearcuts that have been growing back. Streams with chains of beaver ponds stretch over a fairly good-sized area. But, the water generally stays a bit on the cool side in the streams because there seems to be a fair amount seeping out of the peaty ground.

This is looking northward at one of several exposed mud bogs in the large meadow. It is located on the east side of a stream running south to north through the meadow. It has a somewhat coarse peaty texture, and at the time the picture was taken, the water was so low, that it had thickened in many places enough to walk on lightly without sinking. It felt like walking on top of a mattress. Some vegetation started growing on top of the exposed mud. Its depth varies from waist deep to over 6 feet deep (couldn't find any bottom)!

This is looking west at a small beaver pond just upstream (south) of the above bog. It gets mud exposed in extremely dry years due to low water levels, or during excessively wet years due to the beaver dam's failure to contain large amounts of water flow. Its texture ranges from coarse to fine, with the finer stuff located a little further away from the main water flow from the stream. Its depth ranges from knee deep up to over your head, and in many places the "bottom" isn't truly that solid and can therefore be "worked" even deeper, the extent of which is unknown! Some parts towards the far back side of the pond contained sticks from beavers.
