Milling the stock
After the pieces have been cut to rough size, the next step is to true the faces and edges for subsequent operations.  This process is most efficiently accomplished if things are done in order. The method which works best for me is as follows:

  • Using a jointer flatten the face of each component.

  • Then bring the pieces to finished thickness using a planer.

  • Next straighten one edge of the part using the jointer.

  • The last dimensioning operation is to bring the pieces to finished width. For pieces 9" or under I use my planer.

The 11" wide lower rail is brought to width on the saw, leaving 1/32" to be removed by the jointer after opposite edges are made parallel.

After all parts are milled to thickness and width,  use the saw to bring them to their final length.  Your success in making good tight joints will depend on your ability to cut the pieces at 90 degrees to the plane of the door. A small error here will result in an open joint on one side of the door or the other.
