The purpose of this page is to provide a weekly update to my ongoing research which has to do witht he installation and configuration of Oracle 9i on Redhat Linux. The following is a chronological listing of research and activities performed. Notice the MORE button. If there is more information for a date, this button links to that info.

Completed reading installation notes from Howto and Oracle.
Printed and assembled Oracle's official Installation Guide and Administrator's
Guide.

|
Explored existing Oracle system on Shakespeare. Began pre-installation checklist. Contacted Dr. Plaza for installation disks and documentation - he recommended installing version 9i of the software. Dr. Plaza intends on having the software available ASAP. |

Met with Andrew Heuneman to make sure all pre-installation steps are completed. Began installtion of Oracle RDBMS Enterprise Edition 9i. Installation uncuccessful. Install process halts every time at 50 percent. |

Met again with Andrew to attempt and install an earlier version or the DBMS version 8i R1. Installation continues to halt at 50 percent. There must be some pre-install step that we overlooked. Checking the list numerous times reveals no oversights - what could the problem be? |

Tried yet again with a different version after trying as many fixes as we could come up with or find on the internet. Again, Oracle's install quit at 50 percent complete. Still trying to find out what the problem is. |

spring break - worked on tan and forgot about Oracle for a week. |

Success! After weeks of poking around the sytem and the internet trying to fins what could be the problem, Andrew stumbled upon "ulimit." Ulimit is the upperbound limit for the bash shell (default shell of Oracle)for numerous environment settings. For Example: Max num concurrent processes, Max num files. Max filesize, etc... Upon changing Ulimit for Max num files open at once, and max file size, installation completed successfully. Oracle RDBMS 8.1.7 is now installed on the Shakespeare. |
