H a p p y B i r t h d a y , R u d i !
On April 16, 2000, I turned one year old. Wow! I graduated to adult food and (sadly for Lora and Andi) have completely lost that sweet "puppy breath" that you must know about if you have a baby dog at your house. It's OK, though, because I am really calming down now. I am completely housebroken - going inside just seems wrong to me! Also, I sit, stay, down, come, fetch, hop up, and walk on my back legs at will and by command. I am still eating 3 times a day, but my...er...output has decreased a lot. In all, it is just a great life. I have more photos of me on and around my first birthday. Hope you enjoy them!
Hello! Here I am a few days before my birthday, looking at the camera.
For fun, use your mouse to right-click on this photo and then say "View
Image"...this picture is absolutely HUGE! In this photo, you can see that
I am really looking like my dad these days.
Notice that my nose is now squarer and my face is more muscular than it
was in my baby pictures. People have noticed
that I am more mature lately. I stayed in York, PA, for two weeks this
spring with Lora's family, and they really noticed a difference even from
Christmas, which has to be my favorite time. Ripping things up, yeah!
Even though I am a big boy now, I still like to play. Here I'm standing
on my back legs, play-fighting with Andrew. This is our favorite game.
After this part comes the wrestling on the ground, then back to the beginning.
It can go on for 10 minutes or more. I love it! I also like a good game
of fetch, and the apartment is nice and long so I can get up lots of speed.
Of course, a quick game of tug-of-war is always appreciated, as is a good
run outside. We go sometimes to White Clay Creek State Park (just up the
road), where there is a field full of acres and acres of nothing. Woo hoo!
I just run and run and run, sometimes for a half hour or more (see, I told
you we terriers are active!), and then it is time for a nap. Important
summer dog tip: Always bring water with you for you and your dog on
a hot day. Remember, we cannot sweat like you, and black fur like mine
can get hot even though I don't have a lot of it! A good trick to get dogs
to drink enough water is to put in just a splash of orange juice, so it
is sweet. It works much better than trying to explain to your dog about
the dangers of dehydration. You know the old saying: You can lead a dog
to water...
Here I am with my two friends, Milo and Brutus. They live near me in our
development. Milo is a two-year-old Boston terrier (but small for the breed!),
and Brutus is a miniature smooth Dachshund about my age. There are other
dogs in our neighborhood, but they are mostly big or about to be big. It's
always fun to see these guys outside and play with them in the little field
across the street from our house. Little dogs are way more fun than big
dogs. I don't think big dogs quite know how to handle us. Too bad for them!
I can outrun and outplay the 90-pound Golden retriever in the next building,
and so can both of my buddies here. Watch out for us if you meet us on
the street, we are small but savage!
The
only thing better than wrestling with people is wrestling with other dogs.
It is really important for dogs to have other dogs to play with, at least
once in a while, because we are pack animals. Some dogs are more social
than others, but they all need at least some contact in order to stay happy.
I am really outgoing and so it is nice to have other social small dogs
to play with. I also love big dogs, children, adults, cats, birds...all
right, I am just the social butterfly of the neighborhood. I can't help
it.
Me, ready to go! I stand in this position a lot, with my front paw up in
the air. We think this goes back to the original (1860s) crossings of the
old black-and-tan terriers with whippets and greyhounds in order to streamline
the body and face. That would also account for my great eyesight. Most
people think that dogs have bad eyes, that our noses make up for it, but
that is not true in every case. Greyhounds are sighthounds, which means
they have to see the game and point at it so the hunter can go get it.
I can see a little bird in a tree hundreds of feet away, in the day or
at night. My nose is also very good...We live on the third floor and I
can tell as soon as I come in the building if someone I love is at home
up there. I will run up the steps and scratch at the door. Let me in, I
know you are in there! I am really lucky to have a good nose and good eyes.
And yes, before you ask, my ears work pretty well too! How could they not?
Look at me! I love being outside because there is so much to see and hear
and smell. Summer is coming, and I could not be happier! By the way, I
really look like my dad here, I think!
What's
this I smell? Just a camcorder. Lora just got a new piece of equipment
that allows her to make digital photos and movies from videotape. Wow!
Soon you will be able to see streaming video of me in action. Also, it's
super-easy to make lots of pictures without actually developing film. All
of the photos on this page were made with the Dazzle Video Creator. Finally,
an easy way to get lots of photos of me!
Happy
birthday to me! These photos taken 16 April 2000.
