Conformation (Breed) Competition 
IS IT A BEAUTY CONTEST? To the general public this competition might appear to be a beauty contest, But they are much more than that. Dogs in this competition are not judged on beauty alone but instead are judged by how close they fit the standard for their breed. Breed standards are determined by the parent club of each breed, and can change thoughout the years.A good example of this is that in the past, Doberman Pinschers and Great Danes were required to have cropped ears; now they may be shown cropped or natural. Height, weight, color, and temperament requirements are determined by breed standards. Beginning to compete in dog shows is easier if you have a mentor. A mentor is usually someone that owns and shows your chosen breed, often the breeder from whom you bought your show quality pup. An experienced individual can teach you about the different classes, into which dogs are entered, how to groom the dog for the show ring, and how to handle the dog in the ring. If you don't want to show the dog yourself, you can hire a professional handler to show the dog for you. Handers charge various fees for showing your dog and can also help a mediocre speciman of a breed look better and show well. The handler customarily keeps your dog during the process of making it a champion.
THE MAKING OF A CHAMPION In an AKC dog show, winners are awarded a certain amount of points depending on the number of dogs they defeat in competition. A dog must win 15 points under three different judges, including two major wins of three to five points,to earn the title of champion.
