Welcome to my Obedience Page. This is where it all started. A few months after Mom adopted me, she said it was clear I needed some training (I didn't think I was that bad!). So she checked out several schools and found one that was just perfect. After training for six months she decided to take me to an Obedience Trial. I did all right, but mom was so nervous that she messed up and we didn't get any ribbons or anything. About three months later, we tried again and I got two CD's in one weekend from AMBOR and UKC. After that we got another CD from ASCA. That's why I have so many letters in my name. If your asking yourself what in the world is he talking about, read the Obedience FAQ I wrote for you: What is Obedience? Obedience is a sport in which dog and handler must perform a series of prescribed exercises used to test a dog's attention, temperament, attitude, intelligence, willingness to learn, and ability and willingness to obey commands. Most of all, it is fun! Who can do Obedience? Anyone can! It makes no difference what size or breed your dog is, everyone is welcome. Some breeds are considered "naturals", but never forget that each dog is an individual. You never know if there is an Obedience star in your dog until you try. Why should I do Obedience? 1. You will have a well trained dog that is a benefit to your family and the community. 2. You will have formed a bond with your dog that deepens your relationship. 3.An obedient dog is a safe dog. Many of the Obedience exercises can be transfered to "real life"situations such as keeping out of traffic, or from eating something harmful. 4. You will always have something to show off to your friends! No one can get out of my house without hearing "Look what Poncho can do!" What are the Exercises? The Obedience exercises and titles vary slightly depending on the registry you are competing under. The two main registry exercises and titles are here: AKC or UKC. How do I register my dog? If your dog is fully AKC or UKC registered, you may enter their events. If your dog looks purebred, but has no papers, click here to read about AKC ILP numbers. If your dog is a mixed breed, click here for information about UKC LP numbers. Mixed Breeds may also register with AMBOR,the American Mixed Breed Obedience Registry. ASCA,the Australian Shepherd Club of America, also allows Mixed Breeds to compete as long as they are registered with AMBOR or UKC. You can receive titles from multiple registries. How do I get titles? You must receive 3 qualifying scores. A qualifying score is at leat 170 out of a possible 200 points, and at least half of all point possible for each exercise. A combination of places and points in both Open and Utility can earn an AKC UDX and Obedience Trial Championships. How do I get started? Start by finding a trainer in your area. If you can't find one, or can't find one you like, try books and videos. You may also join an email discussion list, or start one of your own. Depending on your dog, you may want group or private lessons. A good trainer should be able to evaluate your dog as an individual and set up a training program that fits you and your dog.
