This page is dedicated to the American Bulldog, and featuring Stonewall's Cherokee & Awesomes' Choctaw of Stonewall.
In our opinion the American Bulldog is the ultimate dog. Also known as the Old
English White, Country Bulldog or Old Style Bulldog, their ancestry can be
traced back as far as the 1600's. It has always been known as the true working
Bulldog throughout it's long history. Bull baiting became illegal in England
in the early 1800's and if it were not for the immigrants that settled in the
US who brought the original Bulldogs with them, we would not have this
magnificent breed. The American Bulldog is still being used in the capacity in
which it was originally bred, (hunting wild game, catching free ranging
cattle, family guardian and predator control) and doing it very well.
They
have the heart and strength to do most any job exceedingly well.
The American Bulldog is a very loyal companion to family and friends, but
tends to be wary of strangers. This, along with his excellent athletic
ability, has made him a top candidate for the job of personal protection dog
and family/home guardian. If the need should arise, he will protect his family
without a care for his own life.
The general appearance of the American Bulldog should be that of great
physical strength and muscular form. Weight and height vary with bloodlines,
but a balanced overall structure is desired. Stable temperament and a love for
children of all ages are characteristic of the American Bulldog. Thinking
capacity and discretion are apparent in his ability to size up a potential
situation quickly and act upon it appropriately. He can fiercely protect his
charge one moment, and be trusted to curl up with a small child the next. He
will live and work well with other animals if given the proper socialization
when young. American Bulldogs are extremely easy to train. They exhibit the
will to learn and the want to please their master, regardless of the task at
hand. As with any large and powerful breed of dog, a good base of obedience is
essential. A class type setting for obedience training is ideal as this adds
socialization and distractions to the learning experience.
