Hdqrs. First Detached Battalion, Army of Occupation

Near Lisbon, August 30, 1861

MAJOR: I have the honor to make the following report of the operations of my battalion near Lisbon.

In accordance with orders received two days previous, my battalion took up the line of march to Grafton with the stores left at Clarksburg by the Pennsylvania regiments. While enroute on the West Union road we encountered a detachment of Confederate infantry escorting a four pound cannon.

On the 29th, the enemy hit the head of our column driving the second company from the field in some confusion. The first company was thrown out as skirmishers. After reforming the right wing of the battalion, I sent the third company to the left to engage the enemies artillery piece. The third company was devastated by case shell ripping through their line of battle. The artillery piece then turned on the other two companies of the right wing. We retreated from the field, in good order, to the cover of the woods and our reinforcements from the left wing.

On the 30th, I pressed forward with the left wing of the battalion to engage the enemy again in hopes of driving him from the field. I threw the sixth company forward as skirmishers to reconnoiter our front. The enemy had fortified his position with a set of breastworks. I advanced with the left wing and engaged the enemy at the crest of the ridge. I then threw the sixth company out on the left as skirmisher to drive the artillery piece from its position, while I engaged the breastworks on the right of the ridge. The sixth company under the command of Lt. Wood managed to silence the artillery piece and charged the left of the breastworks with terrible losses. At that same moment I advance, at the point of the bayonet, with the remainder of the left wing capturing most of the enemies force. My command and staff performed their duties with intelligence and gallantry, and have my sincere thanks. The list of casualties is now in your hands.

Very respectfully, your obedient servant,

A.W. Grover

Lt. Colonel, Commanding.
