WELCOME TO
THE ROYAL CANADIAN CADETS DRUM & BUGLE CORPS!!!
INTRODUCTION & PURPOSE Greetings! It is my pleasure to welcome you to this, the home of Canada's newest drum & bugle corps, a corps that will truly belong to the nation. The purpose of The Royal Canadian Cadets will be, over a 5-year period, to bring drum corps to those areas which have never had the honour of having a corps within their borders--or who have not had the privilege of hosting a corps for a period of ten (10) years or more. The Royal Canadian Cadets will bring together youth from Canada's army, air & sea cadets auxilliaries, along with those "retired" cadets (18-22 years of age) who would like to experience the "wild, wonderful world of DRUM CORPS!"
WHAT IS A DRUM & BUGLE CORPS? As there are some cadets across Canada who are reading this, and do not understand what the meaning of drum corps is all about, this "layman's explanation" is for you: While the instrumentation of a drum & bugle corps is SIMILAR to that of a marching band, and while they both march on a regulation U.S. football field, they, by no means, the same! A drum & bugle corps is not sponsored by any school entity, nor is it's membership restricted by to those who reside within that school district; but is, in fact, a musical "sport," that can (and often does)attract members from hundreds, or even THOUSANDS of kilometres beyond "the home area." A drum corps is (up to) 128 young people between the ages of 13-21 (22 if born after 01 JUN), who eat, sleep, think, breathe, live & perform as ONE MIND, ONE BODY, all in pursuit ot the same thing: To be named the DCI (Drum Corps International) World Champion for that year!! A drum corps competes against other units within its region (or circuit), as well as those from across Canada, the United States, Europe & Japan; corps will spend upwards of 45 days on the road, having travelled over 16 000 kilometres and performing in front of thousands of people throughout the summer. For many, this experience is the beginning of a "long love affair" with the activity; they will continue to follow it long after their own marching days have ended--even into their late-adult years. For others, this dedication allows for them to go on to have succesful lives & careers, as it becomes their driving force for the future.
