The uniform of the private infantry soldier throughout the Confederacy vary in color and cut. To simplify matters however, we will define the infantry uniform as follows:
3. One pair of underdrawers
4. One pair of sky-blue army trousers courtesy of our enemy...Abe Lincoln.
5. One pair of suspenders
6. Jacket, gray or butter nut
7. Socks and Brogans, if available.
Some Confederate soldiers had no shoes and had to make the long, forced marches barefoot. After a battle, if the opportunity presented itself, a barefoot infantryman would "appropriate" shoes from his fallen enemy.
