Edzell

On 1st August 1940, No 44 MU formed at Edzell, the landing area was already being used by 8 SFTS Montrose as a Relief Landing area. Buildings and services were not yet complete when the First Aircraft arrived, This was a Hurricane which arrived on the 13th August.

With The German Invasion thought to be imminent in 1940, Black Watch detachments occupied strong points around the airfield and a searchlight was manned continuously. By the end of September two 4.5" Howitzers were positioned in the Hills to the north of the Airfield.
