This is how the M38A1 looks now...I have re-upholstered and keep up an ample supply of spare parts. Note too that the tires are now Military ND's. These Jeeps; actually a Willy's; have a 17 gallon gas tank and get 15 mpg...not too bad for the super low gear ratio. Top cruising speed is about 50 mph. M38A1's have a foot pedal starter above the gas pedal. The seats are original and non-adjusting. Note too the lack of a roll bar. The dash lights are red, and the BO (blackout) lights cast a weak light for combat area use. The headlights even have a 'lock' on them to prevent accidental use and brake light illumination if desired. It drives like a truck, has a non-syncro-3 speed transmission. The hubs are engaged constantly and the position of the transfer stick determines 2 wheel or four wheel drive. The '3rd' stick determines high-low gear ratio. I can attest this thing can go where most modern 4WD's can't. I must admit though, it does not like thick mud due to the thin tires. |
