I was on the recommissioning crew from July, 1955 until midway
through her Westpac cruise. I transferred off in Subic Bay,
Philipines. Great crew, Great friends, great ship. I watched her
being dismantelled in San Pedro, CA. A sad end for a great ship. I
attended the commissioning of her name sake, LHD6, in Pensicola,
FL.

Just a note to tell all of you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Remember the reason for the season is the coming of Jesus Christ.
Hope to come in contact with some of my old shipmates. I do plan to
be at the next reunion in August.
Comments:
Some of the best years of my life were spent aboard Bonnie Dick, but
I was too young, foolish and inexperienced at the time to realize it!
I think that's a common sentiment amoung a lot of us Bonnie Dick
shipmates. I was a Quartermaster 3rd Class in the N vigation Dept.
from Jan 1969 to ships decommissiong in Dec. 1970. Made both WestPac
cruises in those years and then transfered to U.S.S. Ticonderoga
(CVS-14) for remainder of enlistment until discharge in Oct 72. Due
to a screwup during moveing from one ouse to another years ago, I
lost all my Navy memorabilia includeing both my WestPac Bonnie Dick
cruisebooks from 69 and 70. If anyone has an extra cruisebook from
either of those years or knows where I may be able to obtain one
please contact me via e-m il. I would like to see a reunion soon in
San Diego where I live and where Bonnie Dick was home ported for so
many years. I spent many an hour at sea and anchor detail as the
helmsman steering Bonnie Dick in and out of San Diego Harbor. Hope to
see many of you at a reunion soon.

I remember very well the cruise of 68. Our stay at Pearl was cut
short by the Pueblo incident, but we had some great times at Subic,
Sasebo, Singapore and Yokosuka. I dearly miss the adventure and
comradship. Couldn't wait to get out at the time. Now I w nder why I
was so anxious. It was the best and the worst time, but I have the
fondest memories of those days.

Hi guys, I suspect I'm one of the few snipes who learned to use a
computer. I say that because I haven't seen many engineering types on
the list of old shipmates. I went aboard BHR at Bremerton, WA while
she was undergoing repairs during the summer of 960 and was aboard
when the old plymouth was catapulted off the flight deck. I exited
the ship upon discharge December 1963, a month after President
Kennedy was killed. I've been trying to locate an old shipmate who
served with me while I was assigned in (A) Division. His name is
Harold Brooner and he was from Tulsa, OK. If anyone knows how to find
this old friend of mine, please E-mail me.

Comments for everyone who has identified himself as a Big Dick
Communicator. Joe Scanlon, yes I remember you. You came aboard from
NCSP (NPO)with RM3 Columbo, RM3 Smith and RM3 Lowcock (pep). Liked
your dry sense of humor. Larry Barney (thumbs) CW operator (good one)
Buddies with Doug Singer (RMC later), Paul Stagg, Stan Rogers and
Charlie Goss, huh? Ron Meek (RAM)remember Akadama drunks in Sasebo?
Buddies with Clem Loudermilk, Billy Joe Gross (Bart Leroy
Tollinger)(later worked at Long Beach NSY). Jimmy Mack Mcknight
worked in relay and did an outstanding job. Don't know what happened
to MACK Daris. I was stationed with Doug Singer on COMSEVENTHFLT
Staff after BHR but lost track of Doug after 76. I know that he made
RMC though. Met RMC Clark in Sasebo in 77 when I was aboard the
Mispillion and he was scheduled to retire shortly thereafter.
Remember e paid for the beer drunk at the NAS bowling alley when he
made RMC in 69. Chuck Olson, think we worked together in the "ANNEX"
cutting tapes and working service messages. You were a hardworking
guy. Weren't you with me and Henry Shoup and Fred Mince at the NAS
bowling alley when Kuiper and Raoul Abeyta mooned the patrons and w
were escorted out? Oh well. Some names that come to mind when I think
of BHR are: Dandy Don Wilson, Pop Worley, Taco Madrid, Dan Doom Duym,
Larry Lapdog Petersen, Frank Lombardo, LCDR R.F. White, RMCM Smith,
Pete Magri, Stan Rogers, Doug Singer, Paul S agg, Grape Nettles,
Larry ZAI2, Herbie Easton, Ronnie Davis, I.W. Harper, Little Dave
Vanconnett, Bill I'll never get my haircut Davis, Rich Faircourt, RM1
Tucker, RM1 Goss, Mouse, Ensign Jim Hammer, Steve Stringer, Plasky
I'm surprised that I remembered that many. I retired from USS
Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 what a difference between that and CVA-31.
Spent 24 years in Uncle Sugar's Navy and never regretted one day of
it (now). Like you shipmates, have many fond memories of those times
it really was better back the . QRU, CUL and wish you all well.

on his military service. He was from Gladys, VA & entered service

Merchant Marines. His Navy papers list the following: USNTS
Bainbridge, MD.: Armed Guard School, Norfolk, Va.: AGC Brooklyn, NY.
(SS William Penn: SS Lafayette SS ESSO Providence USS Bon Homme

Is there any one out there who kept a record of inport times from
1JUL61 THRU 1MAR63 of the WESTPAC cruise of 61 and 62. I know of most
of the cities that we had liberty in, but dates and lengths of time
in port is the question. About five years ago the VFW opened
membership to sailors who might have operated in the sea of JAPAN or
the straights of Korea. I do know that Sasebo Japan was 140 miles
from Pusan Korea. I do not know if the BHR operated in the SEA OF
JAPAN or the straights of Korea during this time.

I was never on the USS Bonhomme Richard. I'm an Senior Airman in the
AF, stationed at Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan. For the last 10 years
I've been wearing the MIA braclet for LT Orville Melvin Cook and I've
been trying to find information about him. This s what I know so far,
LT Cook was a naval aviator assigned to VA-923. VA-923 was a AD-3
Skyrader Reserve Attack Squardon that was activated and assigned to
the Bon Homme Richard in 51' for the Korean War. On 18 July 51, LT
Cook was attacking a bridge so ewhere in North Korea when he failed
to meet at the rendezvous point after the attack. LT Cook was assumed
to have been shot down by Enemy anti-aircraft fire. No remains of the
wreckage were seen and results of searches were negative. His
official stat s on the Defense Prisoner of WAR/Missing Personnal
Office List (for the United States Navy) is MIA as of 19 May 54. If
anyone knew LT Cook or flew with him on that mission please contact
me. I would greatly appreciate any information of any kind. If an one
has any photo's of LT Cook that would also appreciated. Thank You for
you time. Rob

Hi Guys! Great Site! found two shipmates in the log. I am still sad
about the scraping of OUR old home. I lived in Seattle for 15 yrs and
would visit the BHR at Bremerton as many times as my Wife would
allow. I was transfered to the ORISKANY CVA-34, in ea ly 1965, that
was the time that the BHR was to go to the MED. in favor of a newer
carrier going to NAM. It is very hard to get used to a different
ship, even if they are identical. The BONNIE DICK was the BEST of Her
class, feel proud to have Been a part f HER! I WAS FORTUNATE to have
been sent STATESIDE in SEPT. 1965 for my 4-yr discharge, I missed the
tragic bay-one fire that claimed the lives of many of my shipmates.
The yard workers at Bremerton did not like to go aboard the CRISPY-O,
AS WE CALLED HER (for numerous previous fires)..they (yard workers)
said She was haunted! It is interesting that they have problems
scraping the ORISKANY???? Anyone remember the old joke about GILLETTE

I apologize for bringing politics into this wonderful site George,
but I feel that we all, no matter what our rates or ratings or ranks
are, one big family. One of our own is running for President and I
feel that I must back him. Senator John McCain was t e one that took
the Zuni in his fuel tank in the Gulf Of Tonkin the day we were
scheduled to return in '68. He survived that tragedy, just to be shot
down over Hanoi and our favorite target, the good ol' power plant. He
was a P.O.W. for 5 and 1/2 years, e during tremendous pain and
remaining firm in his conviction of the American way of life. He has
been a hero of mine since I found out he was a pilot for the U.S.
Navy (they are all my heroes). Let's all get in touch with other Navy
buddies and present a trong backing for this true American Hero.

Cdr. Wilson was killed in PI. I couldn't get over how the plane could
even fly. You could climb right through the hol , and the fuel was

SEAL boats quickly pulled 11 out of the water. Early today, crews on
a dozen Navy and Coast Guard ships and six helicopters used night
vision goggles, infrared sensors and other gear to aid divers in the
search, Coast Guard Lt. Ted Woolridge said. ``Obviously, the more
time that passes, the less hopeful the scenario,'' he said. ``All
helicopters are top heavy. When they hit the water, they are going to
fill with water, invert and sink.'' Woolridge, a helicopter pilot,
was flying on another Coast Guard mission when he received an
emergency call about the crash. When he arrived at the scene about 15
minutes later, he saw only a smoke flare and an air crew helmet
floating in the water. ``We were out there for about an hour and saw
no one,'' Woolridge said. The helicopter went down in 3,600 feet of
water. No floating wreckage indicates the helicopter likely sank deep
into the ocean with the Marines on board, Woolridge said. All the
Marines had received water survival training, but it was unclear
whether they were dressed in cold-water gear, Marine Lt. Patricia
Restrepo said. If the Marines survived the crash and were wearing the
special gear, Woolridge said they could stay afloat for several hours
before suffering hypothermia. The water was about 59 degrees. Of
those plucked from the water, nine were in stable condition aboard
the USS Bonhomme Richard, a helicopter assault ship equipped to
handle trauma cases, Marine Lt. Joshua Smith said. Two others were in
good condition with minor injuries at Balboa Naval Hospital in San
Diego. The helicopter crashed after taking off from the Bonhomme
Richard en route to the USS Pecos, the Navy tanker that provides fuel
to ships at sea, Restrepo said. An initial report suggested the
helicopter approached the Pecos too low and the rope, used by Marines
to slide from the hovering chopper to the deck, may have snagged part
of the ship, causing the crash, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported
today, citing avy sources. All those aboard were from Miramar Naval
Air Station and part of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit based at
Camp Pendleton, north of San Diego. They were on a training mission
to test the Marines' special tactics skills, such as boarding ships,
in prepar tion for a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf,
Restrepo said. Military officials were contacting the Marines'
families and Restrepo said the ocean search would continue ``until
all our efforts have been exhausted.'' The twin-engine CH-46 was
first introduced in 1964, and is a workhorse of the Marine Corps and
Navy. It can carry a maximum of 14 troops in addition to the crew of
four. The Marines use the CH-46E as an all-weather, day-or-night
assault transport for troops and equipment. The Navy uses the CH-46D
version to deliver personnel and cargo to and from ships. Last year,
there were two crashes involving Sea Knight helicopters. One killed
two U.S. sailors in the Mediterranean Sea on Sicily's eastern coast.
Another killed a sailor about 100 miles off the coast of Borneo. The
Dayton (Ohio) Daily News reported in October that the CH-46 Sea
Knight has a history of mechanical failures in its hydraulic system.
A review by the newspaper found 71 documented incidents over 11 years
of leaks or failures of the hydraulic system. There were no deaths,
but three of the failures resulted in fires that destroyed the
helicopters. AP-NY-12-10-99 0322EST Copyright 1999 The Associated

Dec. 3, 1999 San Diego,CA- 0400- my son-in-law Richard wakes me up
and we quickly get dressed and head out to report for "sea duty."
0500- We report aboard the U.S.S. Essex LHD-2 (a sister ship of the
new BHR LHD-6.) 0530- We head to Richards shop and he tands
inspection. After he passes, we check the "POD" and then head to the
mess for breakfast. It is so odd to see women walking around and
working aboard the ship. We go thru the mess line and are dished up
some good ol' Navy chow. We go for coffee but f nd that the machines
were never turned on. So, we have to have "cappuccino" from the new
machine that was recently installed. (the new Navy!!!) After
breakfast, we go and PMS a few spaces and then depart the Naval
shipyard in San Diego at 0930. Once underway I am flooded by many
memories and just "see and feel" everything happening around me. We
head out to the open sea and I am again in my early twenties. Once at
sea, we prepare to take aboard a "LCAC", a new hovercrat that can
carry up to 71 t ns of cargo, troops, and even a tank. It is a site
to see and is it ever noisy. There was salt water spray all over the
fantail as the "LCAC" slowly worked its way into the ship. Later,
after the traditional flight deck walkdown, three helos landed and we
were soon off to lunch. The main item served was pizza with most any
side dish you could imagine. We even had ice cream and pie for
dessert. These new sailors don't starve, thats for sure. While going
all over the ship, I saw many new things we all never ad. There were
soda machines, ready teller machines, and even big screen tv's
aboard. There was even a tv in most every shop or space I visited.
The new berthing areas had an adjustable air conditioning/heat vent
in "each" rack... Must be nice.... After w at seemed like walking
miles of passageways and up and down ladders, I was ready for a
snooze. I wanted to see if it would still be like the old days. I
found a dark space and crashed on a piece of cardboard. I was out in
a second with the slow roll of th ship. I was soon back up and ready
for more action in about an hour. Richard and I covered more of the
ship and I met some of his DC co-workers and we all had a real BS
session. I also met a few of the IC gang and learned of the new
things that they had o work on. Before I knew it, it was time to head
back to port. We slowly made our way back into San Diego and soon the
lines were thrown and we were once again tied up. The end to a great
day came much to soon for me but I really appreciated the chance to
relive my "Navy days" once again......"I guess time travel is
possible...."

I will always have fond memories of my tour on the BHR. I came aboard
in Yokosuka and we shortly left for sea with only three boilers
working and the yard crew working on the fourth one, because the
CUBAN MISSLE CRISIS was happening. I remember we left Iw kuni on
short notice and at top speed headed south with no air ops, because
we were headed for India, only to be called back to regular duties
after the India/China crisis didn't need our help. I enjoyed the last
half of the cruise in 62-63 and got to se many places in Japan (360
Y/$). I transferred to the USS KLONDIKE AR22 after the Bremerton yard
overhaul in the first half of 63. I kept in touch with several of the
Corpsmen I served with. John Denham, I heard that he passed away
several years after ret ring. Galen (Pappy) Ensign died of a heart
attack in late 91 or 92. Mike Hackney retired this year from the NSA.
Any of the rest of the "Sick BAY Crew" let me hear from you.

remember well the day we had Yokuska in sight when our Captain
volunteered to take the Boxer's place on line again since she needed
repairs so we turned around again and did a second hitch on the

Clearly remember those early Vietnam days and the quality and
dedication of the sailors who did their jobs under awful conditions.
Those tough flight and hangar deck final respots with the #3 elevator
broken were memorable as were the amounts of ordnance hat was
replenished, loaded and delivered. The BHR C1 (COD) with mail,
popcorn and sodas was always a happy event. I left while the ship was
halfway through the Long Beach overhaul and went on to do 30 yrs.

George, the adding of Taps was truly a great thing. Thank you. I find

What happened to him? What was Davis' (of catapult that got the two 2
inch Mickey Mouse rockets in his gut) first name? Does anyone know
the name of the F-8 driver that I almost killed in '68. He flew 104
out of VF-24. It was an accident that caused the bird to explode.
When I came to, the rep 8 crew was towing it to the elevator. I want
to apologize to the pilot. Lt. Hupp, why didn't I get something for
saving the man overboard when we were coming back from Da Nang? Chief
Beasley, how 'bout why I didn't get something for pulling Henley out
of the A-3 eng ne? I hated every minute I was on that boat; but, at
the same time, I loved it.

We (in BHR) have a special interest in the upcoming Presidential race
: the paternal grandmother of one of the candidates was BON HOMME
RICHARD's sponsor. Mrs. John Sidney McCain struck the new ship's bow
with the ceremonial champagne bottle on 11/25/44 t the New York Naval
Shipyard. Not quite 26 years later, her son, ADM John S. McCain,
CINCPAC, paid BHR a visit on Yankee Station ... where the Captain
presented him with a welcoming gift ...a framed formal photo of his
mother, taken on that long-ago lau ch day. The Admiral was visibly
touched by the gesture, and was true to form in his gratitude: He
sent an Air Force full colonel down about six decks to ASK(!) a LTJG
(me)for permission(!) to ASK(!) the Draftsman Striker who prepared
the picture if he'd like an immediate transfer to CINCPAC staff
(accompanied shore duty) at Pearl. Obviously, all answers were in the
affirmative. But, no lie, the "ASK's" weren't rhetorical orders; they
were intended and delivered as downwardly-respectful questions. The
col nel made that very clear from the get-go. That Admiral's son is
Senator John S. McCain, who will officially announce his candidacy
for the Republican Presidential nomination on Monday. (As I'm sure
y'all know, he's a retired A4 driver who spent about 5 1/2 years as a
POW.) I met him at a book-si ning today, and asked if now (this race)
is "our time." His reply burned across thirty years: "Yes, I believe
it is. One last mission ..." If you haven't already, check out his
candidacy at www.mccain2000.com. Then do what's right for you ...

I glad to have surfed my way into this site. Already found an old
division buddy. I don't know if all are aware or not but many of us
during the 59-60 period were fortunate in having a skipper that was
what the Navy was all about. I refer to David C. Mcam bell. In 1996
he was enshrined into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. He also
passed away in 1996. His son was able to come here to Dayton for the
induction ceremony. In the next few days I will send George Cox the

from the Seabees as a UT1 with 22+ qualifying years in the Reserves,

I first came aboard the Bonnie Dick on Halloween day 1966 right from
boot camp, I wasent sure if this was going to be a Trick or a Treat.
Initially it was a real shock because my recruiter gauranteed I would
be a Sea Bee. I still believed the Navy had m de a mistake. Then I
decided they must need Bolier Men more. I was assigned to Fire Room
#3. I will never forget the picture that hung just above the hatch
going down to Fire Room #3. It read. ENTER THROUGH THESE PORTALS TO
THE DEPTHS OF A MAN MADE H LL. For the next eight months I believed
it, Scrubbing deck plates and doing Fire Sides, what more could a
young Fireman ask for. Then being assigned to smoke watch duty on a
12" by 12" platform hanging off the side of the 07 level what a joy,
Salt air, unshine getting to watch all the Flight Ops. The
exileration I felt every time I heard the words CLEAR THE FLIGHT DECK
F-8 WITH HUNG ZUNIES COMING ABOARD, or the thrill of watching a
500Lb. Bomb skidding down the deck after an A-4 caught the arresting
gea . Truly an experience most Snipes rarely got a chance to
experience. Getting badley sun burned one day on station and frost
bite the next as we pulled into Yokosuka Japan in a blizard. Boy
those were the good old days. Really now, all joking aside, the e are
now very fond memories, of a time I will never forget. The comraderie
and kinship I felt with my ship mates and the pride I feel of knowing
that I served my country on one of the finest Fighting Ships in the
Navy. Although now scraped the Bonnie Di k will live on in my hart
forever. I wouldent trade that experience or memories for
anything.

A military career that began over 31 years ago ended today. After
AOCS (10-68 at NAS Pensacola) and flight school, my first shipboard
assignment was with VAW-111 (based out of NAS North Island) as a
Naval Aviator flying the E-1B on the Bonnie Dick from Ma to Oct '70,
deployed to SE Asia. A second cruise to the Gulf of Tonkin, Viet Nam,
followed on the USS Oriskany, CVA-34, from May to Dec '71. After
leaving the Navy in Oct '72 and working in the civilian world, I
joined the Kansas Army National Guard as a Army Aviator flying the
UH-1H as a reservist from Feb '81 to May '84. I then went back on
active duty with the Guard flying the U-8F and later the C-12F. Today
I retired as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW5) and the Commander of
Detachment 37, OSACOM. Though spent less time but experienced more
highs and lows in the Navy than in the ARNG, the Navy remains my
first love. It was a great experience and hopefully there are more
adventures yet to come!

VF-24, shoot down date 5/19/67, rescued same date by US Army Jolly
Green, Cpl. Trevino winch operator of Jolly Green (he sent me rescue
log copy in 1992!), off coast of Haiphong..Ha Long Bay. USN SAR helo
went bingo fuel awaiting my ejection and Jolly Green in area,
why?..never found out. We were flying flak suppression for VA-212

grease, heat and continuous rumble of aircraft, boat noises and
intercom remain as a part of my being to this day...at age 59.

Great site. I was the communicator for NAVSECGRUDET Three and we
occupied SUPRAD spaces just fwd of the angle deck. We xferred from
Coral Sea to the Bonnie Dick at Subic in Mar 1961. For a
non-sea-going type, I relished every moment on both ships, but I w s
most fond of the latter. I remember an incident during night recovery
when an A4D crashed during landing, slid off the angle deck into the
sea. We heard the crash and made it to the catwalk just in time to
see the plane hit the water. It floated tail up for awhile, then sank
with the pilot. If memory serves me, the pilot was either the
squadron commander, or it's XO. The ship came to an emergency stop
and the big searchlight came on looking for the plane. I heard in the
following days that part of the se t and the pilots oxygen mask and
hose were recovered, but not the pilot. In the Navy, it was and still
is a dangerous job keeping the peace. CTO1 Don Gaylord, USN/RET.

Bill Lepp was also one of the gang, and moved to Ohio after the war.
If anyone can help find these guys, THANKS !!!

Our group was scheduled to go aboard th Enterprise to relieve night
group 90 but a kamakazi on the foredeck of the big E changed
everything. The BHR hit Pearl about that time and lost their day
group 16 and gained our night group. I am sure the ships company
wasn't pleased to become an active 24 hour operations ship but they
did the job well. S e you in Buffalo

Any shipmates interested in acquiring old cruisebooks and/or
out-of-print books of Naval interest? Tom Clark, 914-472-2071, is a
professional bookfinder who has been of great assistance to me in
locating both. Example: he currently has access to two copies of
BHR's "Second Hitch" cruisebook of 1951 (includes recommissioning and
first Korean combat cruise), among others. He's located three books
for me already, and checks-in by phone or Email at least once a week
with his latest finds. Tom's a retired teacher, so you can reach him
just about anytime, Eastern Time. Be sure to let him know you're from
BHR!

I enjoyed the short tour to the galley and the flight deck. Got some
good footage of her. I put the film away some where. I will have to

Just read the other comments from shipmates that covered most of the
BHR's long career. Transistioned squadron from Ranger to BHR - what a
difference. No air conditioning or other minor conveniences we had on
Ranger but BHR was a fine ship with great sk pper, CAPT Steve
Morrison. Once aboard found out that cousin was ships writer, CWO3/4
Bob Barchenger, also in King Neptunes royal court which did not bode
well for me. Memories are many and not necessarily good ones but
still...., Concord Squadron, cros ing the equator (sunburn with fever
blisters on head - crew cuts were good but did have a down side), the
unofficial war (why did planes leave with full armament loads and
come back empty?), the explosion pulling out of Sasebo, max liberty
in Yoko, eating much duck on way back from Africa (seemed like every
meal but breakfast), the tailhook which was improperly installed on
one of our F-8's, our skipper the world famous and greatest fighter
pilot (his words) "Billy Phillips," and numerous of his escapades,
one of the best S-6 divisions I ever worked with and many other
things. Standing Flight Deck POW watch while we were in heavy seas,
waves over the bow (flight deck) and having one of our escorts
reporting our running lights weren't on - Duty officer volu teered me

I was a photo mate and made the 67 & 68 cruises. I have many fond
memories of the old gal. But I still remember the water hours, jp-4
flavored water and coffee, and what seemed to be an endless supply of
"BS"( I mean chicken !!!). The fine quality beer in the PI that
usually had some very bad side effects. But, it was better than no
beer. We were all young in those days and the experience for all was
a once in a life time opportunity. I do not think that at my age I
would want to do it all over again. The most valuable lesson we
learned on the ship was that it taught all of us to get along with
people from many different walks of life. The sprit of the Bonnie
Dick will live with all of us forever. It was with out a doubt the
best ship in West Pac.

Served with George Cox as an IC man. Had some great times, had some
really bad times. Try watching after gyro for fours hours with that
humming noise in your ears! Worked in LENS, PLAT, Sound powered
telephones, intercoms, RBO's, salinity cells, speed indicators, tv
camera, etc. Worked in most parts of the ship. Remember the equator
crossing, steam valve bursting under the mess deck, Miss America USO
show, plane hitting the round dome at night, couple of dependants
cruises, and the cruise up to Bremerton, where we decommissioned her.
Looking for Ed Hornai, Tim Sexton, Branigan, Sam Mascareanis,

I was TAD from NavCommStaPhil, San Miguel, Phillipines. I was a CTR3
Ditty Chaser. I remember the bugs in the flour bins made white bread
look like raisin bread, but the pilots got a couple of Migs so I was
proud as hell to be aboard the Bonny Dick. I w nt from carrier to
carrier out of the P.I. When you guys went home, I transferred the
Coral Sea CVA-43 for another 5 months on Yankee Station.

I was in the ComCarDiv3 Band in 1958 and made the '58-'59 cruise to
westpac. I believe we moved over to the Bonnie Dick after we almost
sank at the pier on board the USS Ticondaroga. We were planning the
move anyway, but had to go earlier after the accident.
Before going one the cruise, we had a ships party at the Alameda Municipal Arena. Instead of partying, we were playing for the dance and backing the show. I remember that Paula Kelly and the Modernaires was one of the acts for the evening, because I had to share their dressing room.
I noticed that there was mention of the first live television broadcast from the ship in 1959. That was when we were in Kobe, Japan. The CarDiv3 Band, under the direction of MUC Francis P. Davy, was on the Number One Elevator set to start playing as soon as we got to the flight deck. The TV cameras were facing us as we got to the top, that's when were suddenly hit by a very windy cold day. It was difficult to hold our stands and music, but we survived and the show was successful.
The Bonnie Dick was one my most memorable ships. While we were at
sea, I did a show on the ships radio system called the "Voice of
Variety - Coming to you from the lady's powder room in the ships
Library". On several occasions, the captain called me to the bridge
to play bugle calls. I know I had to play pay call every payday and
once when we stopped the ship in the South China Sea, the captain
asked me to play swim call. I couldn't find it in the bugle manual.
He said just pick one out and play it, I remember the name was Soap
Suds Row.

in Cambodia or Loas? 63 days at sea, barely had time to sneak off for
a beer. Here is another good BHR
